Rogers and Camco Toms Question Last viewed: 11 hours ago

I currently have an orphan Camco Oaklawn bass drum and am looking into picking up a 12x8 tom to try to start turning it into a mix and match set. My other kits are a vintage Trixon and a vintage Sonor; both are 6 ply beech wood with round bearing edges.

If I can't find a matching Camco tom, I can get a Rogers Holiday 12x8 tom for a decent price to go with that bass drum, but I don't have too much experience with either Rogers or Camco toms. How much different are they from each other? And how much different are both Rogers and Camco toms sonically from what I've got with my other two kits? Resonance, tone, tuning range, etc. Heads notwithstanding, of course.

Tricky question and tough to give you an accurate answer without knowing which Camco era the Oaklawn bass drum is from. If it is very early 3 or 4 ply, I would venture to guess they'd be a better fit with some WFL or Ludwig toms. If it is later era Oaklawn 6ply Jasper with maple interiors, the Rogers would not be a bad fit. However the 6ply Camco stuff is just a fatter rounder tone, and nothing really can match that. Rogers toms boom and have a nice cut at the high end and a full midrange tone. My advice is to hold out for some Camco orphans. Dig around and you can find some!

Mario has good advice, 1st find out about your bass drum, is it 4ply or a 6ply? Can you post pictures of it?

Have patience and wait for a rack tom and floor tom to show up, they always do, it just might take a few months to get all the items you need to build a kit. As others have said here on the forum it will be well worth the wait and the $$$ spent putting one together.

I love Rogers drums, but I'd be waiting for a while at least. The Camco is quite a different drum, imo.

Thanks for the input from everyone. My bass drum is an early Cloud badge Oaklawn. 4 ply shell I believe - the interior is painted white. Maybe even an old George Way tom might work, although I just missed one on eBay.

Yes just last month we saw four 4ply shells sell on eBay, a 22" bass drum a 16" floor tom and both a 6.5x14" shell that I bought and an ultra rare 8x14" snare drum that Mario bought.

That's the 1st 8x14" 4 ply I've seen...

There isn't much difference between the GeoWay 4ply and the Camco drums at least shell wise.

I am sure one with more knowledge on the early years can give you details like Jolo or Dolfan54.

Also consider just maybe picking up a shell if one presents itself. Getting the lugs isn't necessarily that difficult.
