Nice drum, but I thought the elongated strainer wasn't introduced until the Dayton era. PLease educate me Gary, as I have the utmost respect for your knowledge of Rogers drums.

First of all, Thank you very much! Nice to be appreciated.

The 64R Rogers catalog shows clockface throw offs. Right. Also, it has older pictures/drawings(showing bread and butter lugs) in that catalog from previous year catalogs even though some hardware characterisics had changed over time like lugs. Aside from the major lug change in 1963 to the beavertail-they used up the older parts(clock face throw offs) until they ran out of them. This leaves us scratching our heads all these years later. No waste factory mentality. My catalog is dated 1964 inside on the copyright. There was no catalog for 1965 just an update insert, Price Reductions and Changes, for the 64R catalog. That is dated June 1965.

This drum set was found as a 4pc with the bass and snare sporting tags Cleveland OH. The floor tom and tom tom sported the Dayton OH interior tags. All 4 drums had the flat grey interiors. Very common find. I dated the whole set to be 1965/66 because of this. The 20/12/16 went last week. The buyer had a snare to record with and now the snare is left for sale.

The Rogers Book dates the CBS buy out in April 1966. Some older Covington flat gray interior drums were used up with both Cleveland and Dayton tags when finished. Paper tags were the last thing to be placed on the drum shell after drilling/hardware assembly and then completion with heads and rims. This 4pc was a great example of that. Sometimes all 4pc and 5pc sets found have the older flat grey interior with all Dayton interior tags. Soon to be changed to speckled interiors, different interior screws, etc. when made in the Dayton plant.

With the gap in catalog years it is difficult to be exact(to the month/year) when certain things changed-like the throw offs. An ad for the Powertone snare from a Downbeat magazine showing this throw off would help(month/year). Bet it was around 1965. I don't remember ever seeing an ad that boasted about the new improved lug change in 1963. Nor the different shape new throw off. The drums and combination of hardware characteristics tell us that. Also original owners that are still around and KNOW when they aquired their first Rogers drum set from the store are precious and sacred because some kept the receipts from the music store.

We do have clues with dates in a paper trail but that has to be considered as well. There is a patent for the clockface filed Oct 1959 but none for the later 65ish throw seen on this drum. The Cleveland OH tag with square head tension rods makes me call it a 65. CBS did file a patent for the new style bass T rods in May 66. Filed for dates should be seen as the protection for the already made mass produced and in use part not to be copied. Hope this helps and doesn't confuse more, Gary

The above has an earlier serial number than mine and the same throw off.

13k on his 16k on mine...flat gray interior with a Cleveland OH tag on both.
