Rogers Classmate snare Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hello anyone!

When I was 13 or 14 years old my mother and I went to a yardsale in my hometown one early Saturday morning and I came across a box of old drums a woman was selling. There was a snare drum, snare drum stand and various cymbals and parts to go along with it.

I asked her how much and she said $6 so I bought the box and took it home. Inside I discovered that the snare drum was quite old and had a Rogers badge with an eagle on it. It was in quite nice shape but had a few little bits of dust and rust so I cleaned it up.

I never used the snare much. Basically figured I didn't want to damage something so old and cool looking. I am now 28 and have kept that Rogers snare for all these years in a nomad case safe and sound.

I now play drums in a band and recently took the snare drum out of storage and tried a little research on it. the certificate inside says "Classmate" and so I looked it up and apparently it's from the 1950s sometime. Or even perhaps early 60s. I was wondering if anyone could give me an exact year it was made and possibly a rough appraisal as to its value. It's in (I would say) 85% good shape. More or less. I will post pics. Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this $6 sweet ass relic! Haha

The Classmate was a student-level drum. Instead of lugs it has those center posts, and the trods go thru clips top and bottom on the single flange hoops. A very inexpensive arrangement, the drum cannot be brought up to any serious tension or the hoops will bend. Most of these came in a small case with a stand, some sticks and an instruction book. They were used to practice rudiments. The snare wires are the early wound type and the throwoff is a basic unit.

The Eagle badge places it around 1959 or 1960. On eBay, these drums usually don't sell at all unless they have an unusual finish like Mardi Gras or perhaps red sparkle or some other bright wrap. Yours is in white enamel, which reduced the original price even further.

Sorry to have tell you that the drum isn't worth much...

Dano,

DanC is a Rogers expert, so you can trust his assessment and opinion regarding your Classmate. As an entry-level student drum, it doesn't have much desirability or value, although it can be set up to sound very nice compared to the MIT entry-level drums being sold new. Here's a shot of your drum from the 1962 catalog:

I have one exactly like yours...I bought it about 5 or 6 years ago...I agree that the value isn't very much...It's just a cool drum to have in the collection though...

Sorry, I don't have any pics right now...
