Rogers Dyna-Sonic 1171 Last viewed: 8 hours ago

Just got this one.......

1961 Rogers Dyna-Sonic 5x14, Gretsch straight-sided COB shell. This is the first issue COB Dyna-Sonic. Only 280 of these ever existed. Approximately 80 had the paper tag that preceded the Oval Badge. There were only 200 Oval Badge COB Gretch shell Dyna-Sonics produced. Oval Badge numbers started at 1001. This drum is number 1171. The bearing edge is radically different than the Second Issue Dyna-Sonic. This one is a rounded edge. The drum is shown in as purchased condition, these are the purchase photos. And after initial cleaning. It is very restorable.

I need some extremely good B&B Lugs. I am going to do the epoxy fix on these. I will buy uncracked lugs to stay with the drum. And I am also looking for a three screw frame.

I would be interested to know your thoughts on the difference in sound between the two types of shells and bearing edges when you get this one back together.

I like the look with the B/B lugs.

Don't see any reason why that won't clean up. Great Score!!

Regret can't help with parts. Rogers chrome is top notch.

Ploughman,

Congrats. Very nice addition to your collection, and shouldn't require too much polishing to get it looking new. But why is the snare guard plate on the bottom hoop mounted upside down? Or could that be correct for a first generation Dyna?

I've always liked those Gretsch-shelled drums from Rogers, the 8-luggers as well. A really cool piece of history, little known ...

That looks like it will be a beauty, good luck finding the right frame. Any h-frame will do until the right one comes along, but you already knew that... ;)

I've chased after a few of those over the years, never managed to get it done. At the time, they were bringing crazy money....

It was upside down. That has been corrected. I may spend some time this coming weekend with some epoxy. I do have the lugs back on the drum right now, but will not put heads on. No reason to mess up something unnecessarily.
