Rogers Dynasonic "Prototype". What is this? Last viewed: 48 minutes ago

I saw this on eBay and wanted opinions from our "expert" Rogers members

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-ROGERS-7-LINE-DYNASONIC-PROTOTYPE-SHELL-DRUM-W-BEAVERTAIL-LUGS-HIGH-HOOPS-/141075294548?pt=Vintgae_Drums_Percussion&hash=item20d8be2954

I haven't seen or heard of any "prototype" Dynasonics from this time period, from my years of working with Rogers drums and all published information. Is this drum truly a "prototype" or just the way Rogers was making Dyansonic snare drums at the time?

Think that is a very early Dyna, maybe using a Gretsch shell? Not exactly a Prototype, but early model for sure.

It is a first issue Beavertail shell. I have one with the identical joint seam. However, mine is number 2811. That one is 3411, I got him beat by 600 drums. And I know for certain there are nearly 50 B&B drums AFTER my serial number. I don't think that would qualify as a prototype. Usually with prototypes you have a dozen or less, sometimes only one or two. Over 500 drums does not a prototype make. That qualifies as a first issue for the shell.

Now, on the other side of the coin, who has a B&B lug drum in the 2600-2900 range we can compare the joint seam with? If it is an identical joint seam, then what we are seeing is merely the way things were done at that point in time by that supplier ....

Gretsch shells are only B&B, and very low numbers.

The shell on that drum is the same shell used on the b&b drums that were issued just before. What we are seeing is a seam that was done a little differently, in the normal course of a production environment. Maybe for a day or a week, the seams were done that way by whoever was brazing the shells together at the metal shop where they were being made for Rogers.

It is not a 'prototype' or anything like that: the prototypes of this shell were made long before the beavertail lugs came along.

What we have here is the usual seller hyperbole (b.s. to those of you in Yorba Linda) because he hasn''t seen one like this before. If he knew the Rogers shell/lug/etc timeline he would know that these shells had been around for a while before his drum was built.

And the serial tags were pulled from a box on the bench, where they were all mixed up from being handled. This drum and the one mentioned above were probably built in the same 1-2 week period....

Ploughman, DanC:

As long as we're discussing this drum, when did Rogers stop using these elastic bands on the snare gates which pulled the snare frame downward, away from the reso, when releasing the throwoff?
