So this seller is convinced these drums are 1962. The photos are dark but I can clearly see that the paper tag on the interior is the small rectangular post 1972 tags. Looks like memory lock mounts ( although I'm not that familiar with that hardware) These are large drums , 18" and 20" floor, but the seller is sure the script logos are the "backwards" type hence his 62 claim. Oh well....

It's not something to deride him about, but he is in error. The lugs are enough to date it beyond 1962, pus the other points.

It would be a nice gesture to inform him of this. Have you made contact with the seller? I couldn't imagine him/her being upset about it. It's not much of an error, and the drum is indeed rare.

I respectfully tried to point out he or she is mistaken. My intention was anything but trying to deride them for the mistake, but to correct them. I contacted them, offered a link to the Rogers forum and offered my input. Apparently the seller has his mind made up.

I didn't even want to get into the beavers tails with them because as we know, they can be installed by elongating the holes, but its plain to see that these are later shells.

Neither this or the 18" drum for sale are 1962. They have Memriloc leg mounts, which did not come out until 1977. The 72 tag shown was used from 1972-1976. The lugs on the shell were first used beginning in 1964. 1962 would have been B&B style lugs, which are not even close in looks to the Beavertail lugs on these shells.

I have not seen the 72 badge with Memriloc legs before, so suspect the leg mounts were changed at some point from the cast swivomatic style used in 1972-1976. I had a set with both of these shells, with the same black wrap. They are great drums.

Sent this info to the seller, so see what he does with it.

I'm confused the add says 72, the tag says 72 and considering theyre beavertail lugs they wouldnt be earlier than 64, maybe late 63 at the earliest but those are limited. He musta been misinformed when he first posted the add. Beavertail script logo Rogers are 64-74. Mid 70s switched to the big R.

The ad has been corrected. It now reads 72, which is within reason. See, it all worked out. This is a wonderful forum!

also the speckled interior gives it away but the floor tom mounts and legs are the biggest sign and it looks to be a 3 leg a swivo would be four legged..

I agree, I've seen plenty of big"R" FTs with swivo legs and mounts but never the reverse.

What were the sizes of the other drums in your kit?

Received a good note back from the seller. He was good to get the info. Still think the leg mounts were changed to Memriloc style. Suppose it is possible during the changeover to Big R badges.

Funny he now has floor toms listed separately as well as a full set with another set of 18" & 20" toms. Wonder the odds of having 2 sets of each on hand?

Those are 9/72 drums, built from 1972-1975. The Memriloc legs were added to his drums later on.

The first Memriloc/Big R drum kits did not have Memriloc legs at first, they still used the knobby mounts and hex legs for a while, maybe a year.

So, those legs were made no earlier than 1976, and sometime after that someone added them to his 9/72 drums.

Easy enough to put knobby mounts/legs back on those drums.

Not easy to find an 18" floor tom, and 20's are very scarce.

But, his prices are way high...
