Rogers Holiday Question Regarding Finish Rarity Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Good afternoon,

In the next year I am looking to piece together a 20, 12, 16 player's quality kit using orphaned Rogers Holiday drums, preferably from the Cleveland/Dayton eras. My absolute favourite Rogers finish is Black Oynx, but I understand that it is quite a bit harder to find drums in this finish. I would also be happy with Champagne Sparkle, Silver Sparkle, Blue Strata, or Red Onyx. Of all the Rogers finishes, which were the most prevalent and which were the rarest. Not that I want to take all the fun out of a good vintage drum search but I would like the end of my project to be somewhat obtainable.

If you are looking for a players kit, my suggestion would be to find some shells on ebay that are from a similar era that have been molested and just do a re-wrap in your favorite finish. If you are going to try to piece singles together...chances are they won't match exactly due to different levels of fade in the original wrap.

Just my two cents.

If you need any lugs or hardware, hit me up. I have TONS of beavertail lugs from the mid-late 60's. Ill sell em at a very reasonable price.

Hi Chris, As far as what finish is the rarest i would say Blue Strata,Red Onyx,Black Onyx are all about the same rare finish's to fine..More common would be Champagne Sparkle...Common Silver Sparkle...I would look on C/L a few sets have came up in Ca one being a Black onyx 20,12,16 it was a players or restoreable set for a 100.00 I did not get it...Also a Red Onyx set the guy was asking if i recall right 500.00....Mikey

Rarest would be a blue ripple with beavertail lugs and green sparkle. Of the onyx finishes, black would be the hardest to find.

The onyx finishes and BDP would be easiest to match, but I would just buy a reasonably priced matched kit in any of the finishes. It wouldn't be that much more expensive than buying individually ( perhaps less expensive) and you won't have any issues getting the finishes to match. Good luck with your hunt.

There's a cool ble onyx rewrap on Milwaukee CL right now. 20/13/16 with a custom built 10x16 2nd bass drum-----$500.

I have seen silver sparkle fade in varying degrees all the way to dark ginger ale,but I think rogers used a glass glitter,don't know if that faded to the same degree.I agree that pieced together bdp would be your best bet.The onyx finishes were more prone to cracking I believe.The silver and cham were probably the most common in the ere you are interested in.
