Looks like Star actually designed the Sound King lugs for Bud Slingerland, ,,, Bud did not sue Star because they actually owned the rights to the Sound King lugs and sold the lisencing to Slingerland.

Where did you find this tidbit? Those are the 1955 lugs we're speaking of. Star did that in 54 or 55? Why was I not informed?! BENTLEY!!! COME IN HERE! NOW!!!

Please copy/paste the text where you found this, or give us a link, please.

This would be great info to know !

Look like Star may have actually been producing them for a time. That is what my source says.

Back to this one. Those look very much like the Pearl version of the Sound King lug. The subtle differences are hard to define unless you really know exactly what you are looking for. The Pearl tom lugs have a more sharply defined ridge on top of it. They are so subtle you literally have to know the visual difference. This one, from pic #1, is a Pearl sound king copy, with very little doubt.

I appreciate everyones efforts.

After some thinking, I am beginning to think the drums are actually Slingerland drums. (The interior and the lugs make me thing this)

Why the own put Rogers legs on the bass drum, I really have no idea.

The only question I have in my mind now is did Slingerland make a butcher block wrap. If they did, it's obvious of what the owner did. If not, then they may have even re-wrapped the shells.

there are several reason's this has no merit to it Bud slingerland oversaw the development of all things slingerland and the sound king lugs was a big deal to him and the company, He absolutely hated to travel, and would of had to over see this also, the sound king lugs where produced in the US not Off shore!!

At this time, it only word of mouth. Give me some time, I'll find out the full scoop. However, they are, in every aspect virtaully indentical, especially the snare lugs. I haved both Sling and MIJ, and unless you hold literally sideXside, you cannot see the very subtle differences in them. They are so minute, that unless you really know which is wqhich, you could very easily mistake one for the other. I will show the subltties later. I am very hot and tired today...not feeling well.

This is from Wiki, which anyone can contribute to, so grain of salt here....

"Hoshino Gakki began manufacturing drums in 1965 under the name "Star Drums". Hoshino, the family name of the founder, translates to "star field," thus the selection of the "Star Drums" brand name. The drums were manufactured at Hoshino's subsidiary, Tama Seisakusho, which had opened in 1962 to manufacture Ibanez guitars and amplifiers. While the production of guitars and amps was moved out of the factory by 1966, the production of drums there continued to grow. The two higher lines of drum models, Imperial Star and Royal Star, were introduced to the American market and were successful lower-cost drums competing against more expensive American-made drums offered by Rogers, Ludwig, and Slingerland at the time."

If this is true, that's at least ten years too late for Star to have contributed to the design of the 1955 Sound King lugs, as Star didn't even exist in 1955.

The problem with being able to supply the pics, is I have not yet purchased the kit. As of now, I am not sure I will. It's sounds to me like the kits has been severely altered in one way or another.

If I were to buy it, what would it even been worth? - The set consists of a 12, 13 & 16 floor, a 20" bass with Rogers legs and a set of cheap MCS Meinal cymbals.

If you refer back to the original post, there is one close up pic of the lug and a fair picture of the interior of the drum. It's all I have at the moment.

Any suggestions of the value?

Randy

Without an interior shot, there is no way to know. There is no interior shot in the original post. If you can get the seller to provide some good shots of each drums' interiors, we can then make a determination.
