hi all! due to me suddenly finding myself without a kit and a gig on saturday suddenly my eyes were drawn to an ad for a 1972 rogers 13,16.22 in old english white and reckoning to be in mint and as new condition.it sounds lovely but being a ludwig man i know nothing of them being as they are quite scarce in the uk.1 id like an idea of the sound i e boxy as per the ludwigs and 2 is this a golden era for rogers? many thanks in advance!

Not the "Golden" era but still nice drums. Hardware was not as good as the older drums but great shells. A friend of mine has the same kit and they sound great! They will be mine one day. Also it is "New England" white.
thanks for that advice,i bought it and it looks like new! hooray!!

I have a 1967 Rogers, and have owned 4 different era Ludwigs, late 50's 70's 3 ply,70's six p,y 80 S/L.The only real difference in my 67 and your 72's is that the later lug casings got a little lighter, not sure if that had happened by 1972,and that the collets on the swivo hardware were cast, after 68/69,rather than machined, which means they could crack with less hours/use than the machined versions, although i know plenty of people say the cast hardware on their kits is still holding up fine.
I think that the rogers have a different feel than Luddys, and a little extra headroom at the top and bottom as far as tuning range goes,as compared to all of the ludwigs I have owned.I think the sound is right in between that of a vintage 50's 60's sound and a modern sharp bearing edged kit, still warm and meaty but with a little more punch.
As far as heads for the toms you can't go wrong with coated single ply batters, and either coated or clear single ply resos, and I also love the sound of clear pinstripes reso and clear amb resos. On my 20" kick I am running an sk 1 clear batter reso with a clear pin reso with an offset 4' hole, tons of low end,and sounds pretty darn big for a 14 by 20.
Rogers from that era are still fine drums, but without the high price tag, so you can gig them without any worries. Enjoy! I had a black kit of the same era and configuration, and they were great drums. I had coated ambassadors with clear reso heads, and it sounded fine!
