Rogers Question... Last viewed: 10 hours ago

So I picked up a 1970's Big R set today with a 22" bass,12" & 13" toms no floor tom. All wrapped in the KOA finish and all are in great shape. Judging from the serial numbers they date to 75-76. My question is this, all three has re-rings and the speckled grey interiors. Was this common with the first run of Big R's or did they do it for all? I also noticed writing on the interiors of all three, but can't make it out ( I'll snap a photo later ) Thanks in advance guys!

Hi Jay!

To my knowledge, all shells up until the XP-8 series had re-rings and speckled grey interiors. I'm sure others will weigh in with their info as well.

1975-1979 Big R drums will all have speckled gray interior. You might even find some three ply shells on drums with D five digit serial numbers. Not many though. In the fall of 1979, the XP8 drums were introduced. Price list is dated for July 1979 showing XP8.

There are also a few five ply Big R with an almost unspeckled gray interior. I think most of those are close together and have D 95xxxx serials... late in the run of these drums. Lacquer exterior drums, which are also late in the run will have natural maple interiors.

Love the details Ploughman.

ARCHxANGEL; you should be able to locate a floor tom for that setup fairly quickly. There seems to have been reasonably high production in that era.
