Rogers R-380 Kit Last viewed: 23 minutes ago

Loading...

I've got a chance to pick up this kit for a few hundred dollars and would like your input as to whether it would be worth the money. The kit would be used strictly as a practice or studio kit. I'm somewhat concerned about the double tom mount and post, since it reminds me somewhat of the old Slingy mount and post, which I found to be one of the worst ever made, in regard to stability. I'm also trying to confirm the fact that this particular kit is from the 60s and was manufactured by Yamaha. Any "words of wisdom" - both positive and negative would be greatly appreciated. THANKS in advance for your time and feedback.

If it's in good shape and you like it, pick it up!

From the pics I've seen, it appears to be in excellent cosmetic condition. However, I've never played an R-380, nor do I have a clue how it sounds. Also, as stated in my original post, I'm somewhat concerned about that double tom mount. The price certainly seems reasonable, though.

I had the same set in blue pearl and played it for years. It sounded great. They were made in the late 60's, very early 70'd by Yamaha. I remember the tom arm broke within the first couple of years and had a buddy weld the broken piece. My neighbor owns them now and the arm is still holding well. I would estimate the value at $300 max.

oddly enough if it were badged Yamaha it would probably sell for more. Some of the wraps on the Yamahas were really nice though.

Nice quality drums. Don't know about the mount though. I had one on my Black willow Yamaha kit but it was missing parts so just used a snare stand.

Run don't walk. The introduction of this series was historic in the course of drum history. Love them/hate them - don't matter - those represents not only Eve biting the fruit - but Rogers engineering and Yamaha quality. You can't lose. I have done alot of research on these. The only thing I am unsure of is how long they made these before the next generation of R-360s/380s when they re-introduced the next generation (1980) made in Taiwan which were a completely different kit - and far inferior.

Like I said - Run don't walk.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

I've had a couple R-380's. I flipped 'em both, just because I didn't need 'em.

At the time, I wasn't aware they were Yamaha's in disguise. I will say that both of them came with original heads, and sounded like crap as received. I put 'okay' heads on the first one since I knew I was just going to flip it.

WOW! That kit came alive.

I had a set of barely used Evans coated heads laying around, and swapped the 'meh' heads out for the good ones. I was even more impressed. I almost kept it, but really had no use for it, so I swapped the heads back and sold it. I don't really remember the hardware on that one. The next one I got in was kind of huge, and a buddy was interested in it. I sold it to him in farm fresh condition. I'm not really sure if he ever did anything with it.

Well, I was able to get everything (kit, hi-hat stand w/Sabian Sx20 cymbals, Pearl snare, a couple of "cheapie" cymbals, Rogers cymbal stand , snare stand and BD beater) for less than $200, so I grabbed it. The previous owner even threw in three "like new" Evans G2 heads for free. I just finished cleaning up the toms and bass drum. Snare drum will be next, then the double tom mount, BD hoops, hi-hat stand, cymbal stand and cymbals. I'm thinking of replacing the original metal BD hoops with some wooden ones that I've already got. We'll see how it plays out. Anyway, here's a couple pics of what I've cleaned thus far. I'm a sucker for WMP.
