Rogers Tower 4-Piece w/ Matching Snare Last viewed: 30 minutes ago

Loading...

This is a mid 1960s Rogers Tower model drum kit. Catalog color Solid Jet Black Pearl. 4-Piece all matching kit, with an actual Tower model snare. 12x8, 14x14, 20x14, 14x5 sizes.

Available for local pickup, or I can bring this kit with me to the Chicago Drum Show May 14th & 15th (the days I will be 'there')

Couple things that make this kit unique:

Solid Jet Black Pearl- is a lacquer finish (flat black). Original. (I personally could not find a 2nd)

Floor tom has upgraded swan style legs, nice upgrade, not seen on floor tom legs often.

Bass drum has the Retractable cymbal mount installed, not a a Swiv model (little more rare)

Bass drum has Swiv -o-Matic Utility Holder installed, for the tom.

Grey interiors, Cleveland, Ohio tags.

Issues:

- Some nicks in the finish, some rubbing here and there, but otherwise pretty good shape!

- I had the bass hoops re-painted to match the aged flat black, they look great!

- I replaced the bass drum inlays with new silver sparkle, the old inlay was all but gone.

- Floor tom was missing a hoop, there is a new 2.3mm hoop on the top of the floor tom.

- The 12" is a little out round, but a head still fits, and it tunes up and sings nicely.

- Some tension rods were missing, but replaced with period correct rods. (vintage dealer in MI)

- The cymbal arm in the picture is actually a Slingerland part, you are welcome to it.

- Snare stand in picture, is for picture only.

Price: $2,000. There are others around the net with non Tower snares, and re-wraps going for $2,000-2,800. I think this is a fair asking price. Happy to discuss a reasonable offer. Email: [email protected]

Thanks for looking!

Nice kit nailfoxx and very cool that it has the snare with it. Double check your description for the potential buyer's sake and yours as well. Solid jet black "pearl" is a pearl - in other words, a wrap. Your drums may have been painted from day one, but it is not a color I've ever seen on a Rogers drum, and in addition, the vent grommet on the ride tom has black paint on it, which again is a feature I've never seen.

Good luck on the sale. Bet they have that great Rogers sound.

Hey Dan,

Thanks for the note- I wondered about the 'pearl' description too. I had someone tell me, they put pearl behind it for pricing reasons, since it was a flat plain finish, and nothing like a ducco. However, I am always open to being wrong or shown otherwise! I noticed the black vent grommets too, however there isn't any paint on the Script badges, or a sign that they were removed. Very strange kit.

And yes, the bass drum is the amazing! I just wish I was playing more jazz to justify keeping it.

Thanks again!

Checked in the Rogers book and the Jet Black Pearl name was later changed to Ebony, which was also a pearl wrap and probably the most used wrap in the history of the world :D

Your kit looks sweet! And a Tower snare, very cool sir! :)

Edit:

Here's a link to another Jet Black pearl Rogers kit from the 60's with BT lugs:

Very pretty set, but I would be extremely curious as to what is underneath that coat of black lacquer (remember one of our members finding Mardi Gras under painted shells?). Good luck with the sale. That set still has a lot of jazz to play.

With a hoop off you could check to see if there was wrap, I imagine you'd have already noticed if there was wrap or not when changing heads and what not :)

Yep, I took everything apart when I cleaned it up. Just wood.

One thing to consider, if in the end it was a set that was pearled at one time, is new pearl. Anybody happen to know if these were produced in a black lacquer finish at some juncture?

Either way, cool kit and cool sizes. Century Drum in Toronto just sold a Holiday kit in 18,12,14 config that had been stripped and stained. Good price too! One thing is for sure, they work well with or without pearl. :)
