root beer wrap Last viewed: 5 hours ago

Greetings,I HAVE to rewrap my 66 clubdates. That 59 dollar stuff on EbA did not hold up very well in the hot truck shell the other day. They were in the camper shell for about 2 hrs(in their travel bags) and the heat wrinkled them beyond repair. I am stunned. This time I am getting the good wrap and have it done professionally. My first choice is root beer,if I can't find any,it will be black sparkle. I have seen the burgundy wrap and it still isnt root beer. So if any of you Vintage drum dudes know where I can get a few sheets of Root Beer wrap, my Clubdates and myself will be deeply grateful. Thanks MME

Check at www.precisiondrum.com for the color you're looking for. The staff at PDC is the best at what they do. They've done lots of wrap jobs for me. It can get pricey, but if you want the best you have to pay for it!

Another option would be www.jamminsam.com who sells very good wrap and uses the tape method. Check out his complete site. I've wrapped a few kits with this method and they've all come out great. However, if you want the wrap to be PERFECT and look good for years to come, I'd go with PDC.

Let us know what you decided!

Has anyone actually done this? Precision offers any/custom color/image for about $165 a sheet.

Has anyone done this with this root beer color? Seems it would be the only option for many of us with difficulties finding drums with this wrap to complete kits.

I don't know for certain how Precision handles custom graphics, however, my assumption is that they are having existing wraps printed. You could add a color, fade or graphic to an existing silver sparkle/glass or white pearl for depth or just have it printed over white. You would be limited to your graphic designer's ability to create depth as this will simply be a flat image. You might ask if they could print over white oyster which would probably be as close as you could get to the original wrap.

Wraps like pearls and probably the "swirl" wrap you mentioned were created by floating various materials in a liquid base and, when dry, sliced to a specific thickness. That is why there is a real sense of depth to the look. That really can't be replicated with a flat print.

By the way there is a root beer glass available if that would interest you.

See Purdie's thread on restoring a club date kit for his grandson to see what installing glass is like. If you want to do it yourself, the tape method with pre-cut sheets would be the way to go. Otherwise, hire a pro to install that.

I think I have a solution to my challenge. I ran across someone with a 16in FT in this Root Beer Swirl (AKA Tiger Eye Pearl). Now I have 13,14,16FT,24BD. With that, I will cut that 14 down and make a snare out of it (it currently is 10in deep) - which (just wait, trust me, you'll see) will then yield the wrap I need for my hoops (though not all the way around.....enough of the seen sections of the hoops). 14 in of wrap, wrapped around a 24 inch hoop - gets it enough - and if any naked hoop is seen, it will be black anyway and will not stand out like chrome hoop would. Then this resulting snare will be a killer 6 or 7ish inches deep and feature double lugs instead of the single double ended ones normally seen on snares.

The best part is that this was acquired as part of a big deal - after all the other stuff is sold off, it will be FREE!

I love deals like that! I already have recouped 40 out of my 80 investment, and that is after selling only one item. I still have a whole 5 piece kit, 2 flat based stands, a UFIP cymbal, a Slinger/Leedy FT, and a cheap chrome steel snare. I will easily profit enough to fund by Root Beer restoration. Well, then again - there's the heads....and a 24inch head is not cheap! BTW - keeping the white WHITEHALL logo'ed head on the front!

Very nice wrap choice. Did you tape it or glue it?
