I just throw my parts that size in some dollar store white vinager overnight. Takes the rust off. What doesn't fall off wipes right off.
I have to try that!
YUP!!! Probably by the same type of people that would let an old classic car like a Road Runner, Charger, Cuda etc rot in a field some where.Only paid $40.00 U.S. for all of it. And I new they were rusted. I wanted a challenge
For $40 certainly not a bad deal, especially since you knew what you were in for. I saw a FaceBook post earlier in a Restoring Drums Group. Guy found drums that had been in a barn for 10+years. Most of the wood was rotting, to the point of disintegration. I just don't understand why you'd allow something to sit and rot as opposed to either selling or just giving it to someone who could use it. Thankfully I was able to get those 1983 Tama Superstars from the dismal basement conditions they were in before they got to the point of no return.

I figured the people who left a vintage drum kit rot away in some leaky basement are the same people that would let a Classic Car like a Road Runner, Charger, Mustang etc, rot in a field somewhere.
Well Here's the first piece completely Rust free. Turned out better than I thought. That Evapo-Rust is amazing. Unfortunately lost some chrome in the centre around the Ludwig logo and on the backside. That I think was my doing. Always ask the VDF before you start removing rust from chrome parts. DUMBASS I am.
Now I will hit it with Mother's Chrome polish a few times. I have some of the other parts soaking right now. Will have to get more Evapo-rust from Canuck Tire. I'll post more pics when I get more parts cleaned.
Thanks again for all of the advice. This is a great forum.
OOH that came out looking great! If you didn't know what it looked like, you'd never guess.
And you're right, some people just don't truly appreciate certain things or they just don't care.
I'll have to apply some chrome polish on this part soon. I noticed Rust starting to appear again.
When you are done cleaning your parts, throw them in the oven for a few minutes to get rid of the last of any moisture.
O.K. Probably not a good idea. The stove in my apartment is old and I've never used It. Thanks for the advice though.
Okay, Drumguy,
What I do for small parts such as tension rods is after they are rinsed with water (after Evaporust), place them in a large sieve and use a hair dryer on low heat. Shake the parts around a bit until they are dry and you're good to go! Hope I have been helpful, sir.
