Sakae snare drum Last viewed: 1 hour ago

I just bought this snare drum on Reverb. Very happy with the price and the service. This one is from 2011, #0776 - so it's on the way to being vintage already. It's 14" x 5.5" maple, with the 'Mighty Halo' rims. The build quality on this drum is just fantastic. It sounds not unlike a Rogers Powertone to me.

That truly is a magnificent looking drum... Great video also...love the dynamics.. Not a Rogers enthusiast but, I can relate that snare to when (on occasion), I swap out a 10 lug Stick Saver batter hoop to a Tama rosewood shell...

Cheers

John

Looks to be solidly built! The massive lugs, (nice design) and the hoops give it a look of genuine quality. How many plies of maple? Which type of bearing edges does it have? Double 45's, vintage round-over???

Congrats,

John

And the looks are deceptive John, because this is not really a heavy snare. Well, it's 3.8 kilos (8.3 lbs); and a Rogers Powertone is about 3.3 kilos (7.2 lbs) The lugs are not heavy at all, so the weight is in the rims and the shell I guess. The shell is 7.1 mm 6 ply maple, with quite sharp double 45 edges. Sakae also make a 3 ply maple/poplar/maple snare with double 45's and re-rings. That one sounds very vintage.

Sandwiching that poplar layer in there must be what warms up the sound! The lugs look massive, I just assumed they were heavy as well. Sweet drum. Enjoy!

Both drums get nice and wet in the middle range. Great sounding snares.
