Satin Flame Wrap = Rolux Illusion Film? Last viewed: 7 hours ago

I'm almost certain what drum sites are offering as satin flame wrap is really just rolux illusion film? I could be wrong. But when lookin' at pictures, that's what it seems. Maybe this is old news?

My local petsmart sales the blue satin flame material for fish aquarium backgrounds. I compared it to my white satin flame that came from a drum site and it's the same, just blue. Same backing and same thickness.

It got me thinking. Satin flame wrap is pretty expensive at $60 a sheet from drum sites. I contacted Rowtec (which sales the rowlux illusion film) about prices on their stuff. They have a lot of colors.

But you have to buy at least 25"x150'. For clear moire with opaque backing (white satin flame), is $550. Break that down to 4.5' sheets (25"x54") you would have 33 sheets.

Do the math. If they would let you get 150' in 5 colors (30' ea.) I would probably consider startin' to sale satin flame wraps. I know, there's a chance it may not sale and you got ebay/paypal/shipping fees. But still seems like you could make some money.

If I had it to blow, would probably gamble. I'm wonderin' if that's what the ebay seller does who sales the blue/yellow/red. I have contacted him about other colors but he never responds.

The only reason I brought this up is, I have noticed precision drum has gone up to $89 a sheet for satin flame wrap.

I actually just purchased a sheet and a 1/4 sheet of white satin flame for my cocktail kit bein' built from drummaker. It was $59.70 and $13.80 for the 1/4 sheet. I did manage to get 15% off but even they said the satin is goin' up to $79.

Maybe these companies don't know about Rowtec or I'm lookin' at this the wrong way?

Greetings. I have been lurking on this site for some time but have never posted. I just saw this thread and it may actually have solved a problem for me. Among other things I design custom stage sets for music tours, corporate theater, permanent displays etc. I think you have pointed me to the source of a product for which I have been searching for months. My hope is to find out that this material is translucent so I can back light it. This would be a lot cheaper than the drum wrap configuration. I noticed on their home page that there is a picture of a satin wrapped floor tom by the way. Very cool. You sir are a genius.

Having switched from my iPhone to an actual desktop computer I can say that this is EXACTLY what I am looking for and it is the material that we refer to as satin or satin flame. Very nice find.

Thanks

e plastics sell this stuff in 25" widths x linear foot. It seems quite reasonable, and I think they will cut the material for you.

By the way, I have a project coming up that is going to incorporate Rowlux film. That means I should have plenty left to sell CHEAP for anyone that wants some. I'll keep everyone apprised.

I have started a scenery project using Rowlux film and it is exactly what I thought it would be. It looks brilliant when lit from behind. We are mounting it on a clear polycarbonate substrate for support. My question to the drum experts is this:

What I have looks and feels just like "white satin flame" or whatever various manufacturers have called it historically. It is more or less translucent which is perfect for my current use, however, if this is the same material used for drum wraps, it seems like you would have to paint your shell prior to installing the wrap. I would think this would look spectacular over white (or a corresponding solid color), decent to mediocre over maple and rather dismal over mahogany and mahogany was pretty common in this color's heyday. Perhaps this is not exactly the same material? I wish I had taken a picture at the shop today as I will not be back there until next week.

Any thoughts? I bought several hundred feet and figured I would at least be able to re-wrap a snare drum for fun with the scraps.

There are Rowlux Illusion films that are translucent and opaque (white behind it). It just depends on what you buy. But it IS the same stuff, I do know for certain.

Yep. The opaque has a backing that makes it stiffer and almost non see-thru. The next time I wrap drums with it, I may prime the shell exteriors with a color similar to the rowlux wrap. This little bop set consists of a 7x11 pre World War Two Leedy tom, a 12x16 Leedy tenor drum to floor tom conversion from the 1950's, a 16x18 60's Slingerland floor tom to bass drum conversion with Leedy lugs, and a Camco Tuxedo lug snare with its original wrap. The Rowlux opaque White 3-D Floating Bubble wrap is a close enough match for me to the original Camco White 3-D Moire. The Rowlux bubbles are smaller. I bought the Rowlux from Canal Plastics in New York. I have heard that Canal may be getting out of the Rowlux business. I don't know for sure if that's true.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.
