SCORE! Well maybe... Last viewed: 8 hours ago

Picked up a 1958 Gretsch BMP RB 13" tom and 22" BD about 4 years ago, complete with badges, missing original bd hoops, front claws and T-rods, and legs, and no floor tom.

Been searching for the past 4 years for the matching parts, got the bd hoops last year, still need inlay, bought bd spurs/legs recently and just today scored this (pic) floor tom - paid more than I wanted to, and had to settle for a 60's model but the wrap seems to match and it's complete.

Now All I need are the Claws and T-rods!

Any thoughts or suggestions. Anyone do resto work on an RB of this age?

Anything I should watch out for?

Any input at all would be appreciated. I just want to talk about this project. I've been trying to wrap another RB floor tom but ended up simply buying this one.

thoughts? Advice? Comments?

I guess I didn't explain what I mean by "SCORE..maybe" - it's this - is it such a big deal that the floor tom is a different decade? I'm not trying to create a museum piece nor am I planing to sell anytime soon, I do appreciate that it won't be as valuable as if all original but I plan to play this kit when restored. thoughts??

Looks great to me! Resto? Clean and polish shells and hardware = good to go unless there is other issues? Nice score on the FT. Nice to see a plan come together!

That is going to make an awesome kit.

I have a mid 60's Gretsch kit in the same sizes sitting here waiting for wrap right now.

I'm going with that exact wrap for obvious reasons.

Just look at that floor tom of yours. Eye Ball

It makes no difference for you (and many other drummers) that the drums are not all from the same year. I'm not all that familiar with the Gretsch specs from the years of your bass drum and 13" tom vs the floor tom. They look like a matched drum set to me. They are your working drum set rather than a set of drums that you plan to sell for a profit. Black Diamond Pearl is one of the few drum wraps that I classify as timeless. I ordered my first professional drum set (1961 Rogers) in that finish. Of the drum sets in my current collection, If I had to get rid of all but one drum set, I'd agonize about it. However, I'm pretty certain that I'd end up keeping my 1963 Leedy drum set in Black Diamond Pearl. And, that drum set is one that some people would consider to be "unconventional". The sizes are 9x13-16x16-14x20-matching Shelly Manne snare drum that came together as an "outfit". I have no idea if this confguration was pictured in a catalog. SlingerLeedy drums were treated as a red-headed bastard step child when it came to promotional literature. Catalogs featured lousy old black and white pitcures of drums with discontinued badges or the wrong hardware. One of the nicest features of SlingerLeedy drums is that they used the same great wraps as Slingerland drums. The Black Diamond Pearl they used is the large pattern with a lot of depth and definition to the shades of gray and black.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

I would not worry at all about that floor tom being from a different year. They are all vintage round badge. Absolutely beautiful wrap. That is a beautiful kit. I would play those out in a heartbeat. Please set them up and make some pics. That's a killer set.

Very nice! I think only my snare might be a late 50's early 60's RB drum. All the rest of my round badge kits have been mid 60's.

I've just started stripping it down. I like to remove all the hardware, and just let the shells breath for a few days, then Ill inspect everything, lube everything, clean/polish all the chrome, I use turtle wax, then clean the shells/wrap - I just use windex, unless there's something better. Then everything goes back together with new heads, top and bottom. Remo makes these vintage heads I think I'm going to use them.

Open for any suggestions
