Scored a Supra SS Last viewed: 1 hour ago

I just scored a 6.5" Supra SS at a garage sale for $100. I don't know much about these snares but I thought I would take a chance. The shell has a few scratches but the chrome is good. The SS mechanism is functional but seems loose and the guards appear slightly bent. The top hoop is cast, the bottom hoop looks like original, and the snare head has a hole in it. I have two questions:

1. Was $100 too much?

2. The serial number is 1585783, what is the vintage?

I plan on stripping it, cleaning and repairing/replacing parts. Any advice or a source of parts would be greatly appreciated.

I'd say that's a fine price, especially for a 6.5. Not surprised the guards are bent--they stick way out there, but they do their job. For starters, throw a new head on top, & fiddle around a bit with the strainers. Sight down them from one end & try & see if everything looks lined up & level, side to side. Check to see if all the snare wires feel tensioned the same (if they are the kind that can be individually tensioned; otherwise, don't bother). Then give it a play.

Over on DFO, Chas was the SS expert. he doesn't post there anymore, but had some excellent posts on setting these up over there. Should still be archived on the site.

Post some pics......marko

Yeah, I'm not sure about those 7digit serial #'s either. Not matter what, it'll be a crackin' snare. Mike, can you find Chas' SS posts without too much trouble?......marko

Can't see how a Vintage Drum site would complain about sharing that kind of information--one of the great Chas posts, I feel. I miss the man....marko
