Seriously messed up snare beds-- Last viewed: 16 hours ago

Loading...

This drum arrived earlier in the week from an ebay auction. I didn't over pay for it and honestly think the nickel lugs, tension rods, hoops, case and stand would bring more separately than what I paid. But... I bought it on the cheap based on extra holes. My plan was to strip the flaking duco and repaint with black lacquer. I was not aware that the snare beds extend nearly half way around the bearing edge! The red highlighted sections are the snare beds. When set on a flat surface, the drum rocks back and forth on what remains of the original bearing edged (about 3 inches on each side). The long snare beds are 1/8 inch deep at the strainer and butt plate and tapered in the red highlighted section. I didn't play it at all before pulling it apart. Imagine that it sounds like crap? What to do? Trash it? Cut/sand the snare bed down till it's flat, recut the bearing edged and snare beds? I'd need to trim it by 1/8 inch. Looks to me like this was done a LONG time ago. Anybody ever heard of it before? Would appreciate any advice.

Thanks

Jim

This makes sense. Its hard to undo modifications.

Do you think it came this way from Ludwig? As was already mentioned, I would put it together and play it, just to see how it sounds first. If it just doesn't work, then consider some modifications.

You said the shell already has extra holes, so it's a player's drum and perfect for any adjustments you make. You could cut down each side of the remaining 3" original bearing edges and then recut the new snare beds.

I wouldn't trash the shell. Once you're done, this is going to be an awesome sounding drum that you won't be afraid to play out.

Keep us updated on your project.

I'd bet they are original.

Someone at the plant was angry at management that day.

OK, not what I was expecting. Would 42 strand wires make any sense? Never used them.
