Just got my first vintage Slingerland kit and I'm already having reservations about the Set O Matic double tom mount. I have 13 and 14 rack toms over a 22 bass drum, and I'm worried this thing will not hold them well. Not to mention, it has barely any adjustment capabilities. Isn't there anything that can be retro fitted (without drilling), so that I would have a separate vertical post for each tom (like Pearl uses)? If not, do I have any other options?...even a Ludwig modular mount would work better if the diamond plate has the same hole spacing.
Set O Matic Problems Last viewed: 2 hours ago
The Super Set-O-Matic that came out in 1976 was, and still is, a very good drop in replacement for drummers who are dissatisfied with the older dual mount. Picture below.
I agree that the old Set-O-Matic left lots to be desired in terms of maneuverability. I'm using a Super S-O-M and it's rock solid. Just make sure that some of the post can remain in the bass drum. Any mounting system is less stable when it's extended to the max.
I've seen them out there for as low as $40, but there's currently a stand-mounted unit on eBay that was at $255 the last time I looked. What's up with that?!

You won't have to worry about it holding.. I also have a 13 & 14 hanging of a 24 bd. I have had the kit since 1977 & have just purchased a new Post & Bd mount off ebay that both look brand new. The kit has done a lot of work & the setomatic is still 100% functional but looks pretty bad. I agree it has very limited adjustment.. My kit had the later "super" version when I bought it But I could not get the toms close enough together.. so after a week took it back for a swap to the standard setomatic post..
Cheers
