Shelley Manne Leedy COB Snares? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

I'm looking into getting a second vintage COB snare and am deciding between getting another Gretsch 4160 or looking into the Leedy Blue Badge Shelly Manne COB. Does anyone have experience with the Slinger-Leedy COBs?

I hear something about they won't work right with standard wires because of extended butt plate? Any truth to this? Are they essentially Slingerland Sound Kings with different lugs? How do they compare sonically to a Gretsch COB with same heads and wires?

Thanks.

Yes they are essentially Slingerland soundkings with leedy hardware, I run standard puresound snare wires.

The diecast Gretsch rims will reduce resonance. I have both types you mention and if I had to keep just one it would be the Gretsch. That being said, the Slingerland/Leedy brass shell snares are great!

I think that the Chrome Shelly Manne snare uses the same snare strands with the metal straps as my two wood shelled Shelly Manne snares with Stick Saver hoops. I love these drums.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Thanks for the feedback! Why are the Leedy COBs a whole lot more costly than the Slingys? Rarity? Lug elegance? Or maybe the 3 point is a better strainer? The Zoomatic in my brief experience was a bit flimsy and there's no repro from what I've seen.

I have one came with my duco kit.

Yeah the snare wires are spot welded to a strip of sheet metal. Mine are still intact. I have seen people use regular snare cord too.

I'd guess the price has to do with scarcity and the art deco lugs.

I would love to get a 4160 or 4165 for my gretsch, my dream would be to get a rosewood stain that actually matches my set with a stop sign badge.

Here's the Shelly with the duco set.

Here's what it sounds like, along with a review of the entire drumset.

That is a very cool Leedy drum set that looks as though it begs to be played.

Great sound, all of them. I like the sound of your cymbals, there oldschool warm but still have good brightness to them, and I reckon that snare is everything if not more than a supra phonic.?

I love the jazz era
