I have agreed on price with one of our fellow Forum dwellers and have run into a snag as it pertains to shipping. This is a small drum set (22,13 rack and 13 snare) with some hardware. Total weight will be around 57 lbs in one large box. The estimates I am getting are close to $200. I am breaking the drums down and placing them in russian toy style. I am providing the box and the packing materials. $180 is the lowest quote I have received and that is actually talking to someone as opposed to some online estimator. I constantly hear of guys shipping drum sets for $80-$100. What am I missing? Attached are a picture of the drums.
Shipping advice Last viewed: 7 hours ago
where is shipping from and to where is it going ? what is the box dimensions and weight ?
Large boxes will sometimes go by "dimensional weight" instead of actual weight. Any surcharges have been tacked on lately as well. Shipping to private residence can be more than to a business address with FedEx.
i ship stuff all the time, and though i don't ship kits i used to ship kits at my old job all the time.
we would ship a kick with a floor tom inside (and sometimes a tom as well) then ship with a box inside another box. for what you have it does seem a bit much, BUT it also depends on were its going, weight and the size of the box.
when i personally sell drum parts in bulk that's going to be weighty or in multiple boxes i write in the payment details, "if you have a ups or fed-ex account, i can use that to ship".
some buyers feel better about that because:
- they know exactly how much it was to send (since they're paying for it)
- they can track it
- they ask you to add a insurance amount just in case something happens
wish i had better info for you but there's alot of factors that can raise the price of shipping.
I find that anytime I ship to the east coast the shipping is much higher than ifI ship elsewhere.
Any time you cross the Mississippi..I heard prices go up.....
That kind of money to ship those three drums in an oversized box might be expected when shipping from Boston to Honolulu. I've shipped and received many four piece and five piece drum sets with 22" bass drums. UPS and Fed Ex shipping prices to Texas from all parts of the USA have never been that high. Shipping and receiving via Greyhound bus has been the fastest and least expensive method.
Shipping has become just so ridiculously expensive. It's amazing though how the US Postal Service can be in the red constantly.
I have found that Fed Ex is cheapest when shipping kits. I have also found that the price goes up signicantly when you go to a box size larger than 24x24x24. I would take the hardware off the kick (lugs and all) and wrap it in 2 inches of bubble wrap. If it is a 22inch kick you should be able to get that into the 24 inch box. Then I would nest the floor tom and the rack if possible. You could remove all the hardware and ship the hardware in a flat rate box if weight is still an issue. Then I would send the snare in a separate box.

If you can get it into a 24x24x20 box I believe it is small enough (by 2 inches) to ship through USPS which is cheaper than FedEx or UPS.
