Shipping Damage! Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Well, its happened to me. I bought a 70s Premier jazz kit on ebay recently (20,14,12). Intending on eventually rewrapping these and keeping. But the bass drum suffered a damaging drop by the post office and the leg mount cracked the shell. I would greatly appreciate any advice on repairing the drum. It looks to me like it could be done. The wrap I'm not concerned about, just the shell. If you could offer any help, please do. My thanks in advance.

I would put in a claim on ebay, its the SELLER'S responsibility to insure the item. I sold a printer one time, and the post office lost it. i have the reciepts to prove that i sent it, but it never got there. ebay paid the dude back! then ebay charged me the price they paid him back!!!! Apparently i was supposed to have gotten insurance, even though i put in the auction that the item would be shipped uninsured. so, unless you havent already tried, i think you could maybe put in a claim and maybe get some cash back from the seller to cover some repairs..

Appears that it was not properly packaged by the seller so certainly some sort of reimbursement is justified. How much hassle it will be and what success you may have are other issues.

As far as repair, it doesn't appear too serious. I would remove the leg mount, use a small brush to work some TiteBond Wood Glue well into the "wound" and then clamp it back into it's original shape. That might require a small piece of 1/8" plywood or something flexible enough to follow the curve of the inside of the drum. Be sure to put a piece of waxed paper over the glued area first so the clamp, or plywood spacer, doesn't get glued to the drum. It should rewrap just fine.

Elmer`s makes the best wood glue product,...Yellow waterproof...dries clear..glue and apply pressure from the inside out,..the way it fractured !!

Tis what I`d do !!

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

i have had an issue like that before. not the shipping damage but a bass drum with a spur that had been ripped, almost completely out of the shell. here are some steps on what i did. if i can find my pictures of the repair i wll post them.

1) i picked all the loose wood from between the ply's

2) i got 2 pieces of an old trash shell and cut them so they met up with the concave of the shell. i used that so i could have an even press on both sides of the shell.

3) i used gorilla glue and a seringe to put the glue inbetween the ply's.

4) use the the 2 pieces of the shell and some clamps to mash the plys back together. dont forget to wipe away the excess glue.

5) after i did that i had a little bit of a dip in the wood and my hardwear wounldnt fit just right so i used wood putty to fill the gap and sanded it smooth until everything fit like a glove.

my damaged bass was alot worse i am sure you can figure something out, but i thought i would just add that. maybe it will help.
