Should I buy this Slingerland? Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Hey guys! Just joined the vintage drum forums and I'm pretty excited, ready to get into vintage drum buying!

Alright, so I need some guidance and help. I've been watching this slingerland kit right now for some time and I'm a bit afraid it might sell soon, and I don't want to take a gamble on something that could be trash.

This kit is a 1983 (assumed from the seller) Slingerland endorsers kit, so I'm guessing it was put together from the buyers request long ago. It is two 22x14 bass drums, 8x12, 9x13, 10x14, 12x15, and 16x16 toms. Looks like it has the magnum equipment on it, and is also 3-ply maple-poplar-maple with no rerings. I've been researching for a little while, and from what I understand, 1980s slingerlands are kinda meh and should be passed on. This one is selling for $1100 though so it seems like a pretty good deal.

This kit is by far my dream kit in terms of sizes, brand, and very close to the type of wood combination I wanted, but I really want to have some opinions on here!

Hello...and Welcome to the forum!

I also saw this kit and thought it was pretty cool! While made at the Niles factory, cost cutting was being implemented. The tom shells are the same 3-ply as earlier 60's and 70's layup, but without the solid maple reinforcing hoops. The bass drums are the heavier 5-ply and easily support the weight of the 3-ply toms. I had an early 80's kit with the same shells and was impressed! Another cost cutting measure was the use of only 8 lugs per side on the bass drum, instead of 10. My 22" bass drum had the same 8 lug design. While not a Slingerland design, the Pearl-style tom holder has lots of adjustment and gets the job done. It is nice that the tom bracket on the bass drums say "Slingerland". These are still well made drums and will sound very good. They'll tune up easily and you'll be happy. There is peeling of the outer lacquer, but the finish still looks good. Considering the amount of drums, and that this is your idea of your "dream kit", than I would say only you can determine if they are within your budget. I do feel it's a fair price for what you are getting. Sure, we all like to pay less, but I think the price is still fair. My advice is that if this is the kit you've been waiting for, then why not buy it?!

If THIS is the kit that makes your heart rate go up, and gets you into vintage drums, then it's worth it!

Is best offer an option?

While there is no "Best Offer" option, it certainly wouldn't hurt to send them a message about a lower price. Try $750 and see what happens. Remember, this kit won't appeal to everyone and selling it may take time. The worst they can say about your offer is "no"! And, I agree with the above statement about it making your heart rate go up!

Thanks for the replies! I asked the guy awhile back about a different offer, and he said he couldn't go lower than $50 from his original selling price, said he was already selling low on it. I just wanted to get opinions on if this 1983 Slingy is worth getting because I know the drums start to get funky into the 80s.

Also the real reason why I've wanted a kit like this is to sort of replicate a Neil Peart drum set, along with adding my own flare to it. I've always admired his Slingerland kit, and when I saw this, I freaked hahah.

Even $50 lower is still lower! Let us know if you pull the trigger on this kit. Good luck!!
