Thanks for the wrapping tip Kevin.
Funny you should mention Joe Morello's Silver Sparkle because that's exactly what I was looking at before I started this Thread! I was looking some video clips on youtube of him and also some photos.
I will just have to compare a 60's/70's Silver Sparkle to this Gretsch drum. The Glitter really is a knock out....but the 'real' pieces of silver & copper in my Champagne Spkl Gretsch is nice too.....the flakes of silver really stand out. I've not seen a vintage Ludwig silver sparkle to compare that's why I posted this thread. Just curious that's all....
There is no way on earth I could take a photo....at least with my compact Panasonic camera - that would do justice to these wraps. And even if I had a better camera...the photos of the finishes are never anywhere near as nice as if you have the drum in hand.
I took these a few minutes ago and I know they're terrible but you can at least see the difference in SSB1 Silver Glitter and 2011 Champagne Sparkle here.
I tend to favor the glass glitter wraps over sparkles as they look a bit more luxurious but as an exception I like silver sparkle better than silver glass glitter. The aluminum flakes inside silver sparkle are actually silver while the crushed glass inside modern "Silver" Glitter looks more white to my eye. Having said that though I do have a vintage silver sparkle (which is actually glass glitter) Round Badge set from the 60's and that wrap actually does look silver so I'm not sure what may have changed over the years. I rewrapped a snare drum to go with it in modern silver glass but it's too whitish. Probably not a problem under stage lights either way since they will end up whatever color you shine on them.Sparkle wraps are also much easier to work with if you're doing a rewrap job for the first (or even the tenth) time. Silver Sparkle seemed to work just fine for Joe Morello.
