Singlerland Parade Drum Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hey guys,

Newby here.

I just had a friend bring me what is apparently a 1958 Slingerland "Legion Heir" Parade drum.

It's in really good shape.

I was looking around the internot trying to find some info on it and after reading some of the articles and posts on this site thought I would log in and say hello.

Anyway, check this drum and tell me what you think about it. :-)

Welcome to the site!

Congrats on the parade drum find. I have a couple myself. I don't think any collection of drums is complete without at least one of these drums around! Though they don't have a lot of monetary value; I still think they are fantastic!

Hope you enjoy the site. A lot of good people around here.

The only other "vintage" drum I have is this much earlier CG Conn.

Perforated Nickle over brass I believe.

It's fully intact too. :D

It could be the result of the photos, but I wonder if it's possible your "Legion Heir" could have been refinished ? This model of marching drum had a large decal of an American Eagle on one panel.

Thanks guys,

From what research I have done I found out that the CG Conn snare was made in Elkheart Indiana somewhere between 1904 and 1915 roughly.

Like I said before it is nickle over brass.

There are not too many example of this snare complete like this that I can find.

I found a few in pieces or just a shell.

It has calf skin heads on both top and bottom. both of which are intact.

It also has a silk strainer on both the top and bottom heads.

I found out that the stamp on the lugs does not say Pat Aug 28 on it.

After messing with it I see that it says: Pat Aug 2 87.

Which is the pat date for the lugs apparently Aug 2nd 1887.

Here is a video I shot before I figured out what it was.

That C.G COnn drum is amazing to look at, thanks for posting the pics.

As for the Slingerland, the badge puts it between 1944 and 1949 and is most likely a Mahogany shell which was common in those drums at that time. They are great sounding drums but there is not much of a resale value in them, you can usually pick them up in pretty good conditon for $100.00 - $150.00. I have seen several people use them as snares on sets for rock or convert the snare to a tom combined with other drums of that time period to create a really nice and warm sounding kit. They almost always have nicks and dings on them because they were used by all kinds of marching groups for years. Good luck with it.
