Slingerland 14x7 snare Last viewed: 5 hours ago

Hi fellows!

I am new on this forum and writing from France. So, first, please accept my apologies for my aproximate english!

I recently purchased this beauty (see attached pics) : a Slingerland, Niles era, 14x7 snare drum.

The shell is equiped with eight sound king lugs, two sticksaver hoops, a zoomatic strainer, a Leedy butt plate and a muffler.

As you can see, the original gold wrap faded to a nice and even silver sparkle.

The "Niles" badge shows a low serial number (15283) wich puts its manufacture date somewhere around 1962 or 1963 (provided that my understanding of the informations found on VDG is correct). This looks to be confirmed by the zoomatic strainer wich seems to be from the first type (narrow slider clasp with 2 holes, no "idiot tab").

I'd like to identify the model of this snare more precisely, but being no specialist of slingerland drums, I need your expertise people!

My questions are :

Is this a 14x7 Artist snare?

I assume this is a solid maple shell, am I right?

I just read recently that someone said a 7 by 14 is a magic size!

I have a 7 by 14 1935 Slingerland solid maple drum that needs lots of work...I'll get to it one of these days!

Rare indeed! You would think with a twelve year life span ('63-'75) the 7" would be more available, but they aren't. Enjoy...Cool1

I can't wait to hear how this drum sounds.

It's missing its snare wire, so I'll have to buy a replacement. I've seen that these snare were usually fitted with 20 strands, but I think i'll give a try to something much narrower...down to 12 strands may'be...I'd like a deep, fat, woody tone!

Nice drum and welcome! Not sure of your preference but the Puresound wires that are specific to zoomatics make a big difference, to my ears at least!

Welcome to VDF, Zadig! That is a nice score. I was actually watching that drum on feeBay.

As Blair mentioned, 7x14 drums are really sweet. I had a 10-ply maple 7x14 DW snare that was hard to let go of when I traded the whole kit, but I got a 1940s 7x14 Radio King out of the trade that has blown me away. It has a 20-strand Puresound wire set on it. I've got the heads tuned pretty tight with the wires moderately tight.

The slingy is now fitted with a remo emperor on batter side, a remo ambassador reso and a puresound 20 strands snare wire and it sounds awesome! I may try a smaller strands count later, but for now this set up is great.

I have a 1966 silver sp. 7x14" solid shell artist snare and it sounds fantastic.

I always love the way it sounded with the snares off as well.
