Definitely 3ply
Slingerland Artist Model single ply or three ply? Last viewed: 3 hours ago
Based on everyone else's replies I guess I am mistaken, but I thought those artist models were single ply maple shells.

So I just double checked Rob Cook's Slingerland book and based on it the artist model was a solid maple shell. I agree that in the posted picture the shell looks to be three plies though.

3 ply for sure. I'm also looking for a older single ply maple Artist, I think Hollywood Ace's were also 1 ply maple up until a certain point as well?
In the '59 catalog the Hollywood Ace model became an 8 lug (as opposed to 16) drum with a three ply shell.
You can't always go by what it says in the Slingerland book. It's great, but there are some errors.
I'm always surprised when people can't see plys. Here's what I see:
It looks like a 3 ply. Most Artists (and Radio King) shells after around 1964 were 3 ply.You can clearly see the three plies in your second photo. Slingerland didn't change their catalog description to "unimold" (3 ply) until many years after they stopped actually using solid shells.Frankly, I like the sound of the 3 ply drums more.
Agreed re the catalogue lagging production..
And yes... Same here, my preference is the ringed 3 ply version..
Cheers
