Hi guys,
I recently picked up a '62-'70 era floor tom (has the black/brass Niles badge with serial number - picture shown on the Slingerland link of this website) and I am trying to narrow down the age of this drum a bit more if possibe. I believe the drum has the "chocolate milk" interior paint with maple-poplar-mahagony 3 ply shell. Does the paint and the presence of the badge indicate a late 60's rather than earlier 60's vintage?

The serial number will date the drum.
Toms had no badges until June 1966, according to Dr. CJ Wenk, the leading authority on all things Slingerland.

Cool. Based on that Slingerland serial number dating chart (thanks for getting me to use that search button Kevin :)) it seems that the median age for my drum would be about '67 (Serial number is 133280). Sounds good to me. Thanks for all the help, it is greatly appreciated!

It's 1967, approximately May.
At risk of getting lynched I just have to point out that the venerable Dr. is just plain wrong in saying "Slingerland did not put badges on toms until 1966".
In June '66 they came back again, after being left off since April '64. They featured only on the bass and snare during this period.
Previous to April '64 they were on all drums in a kit since serials began in Oct '62. So there was a period of 18 months where the toms were date stamped and serial numbered, followed by just over two years where they were unbadged but date stamped, followed shortly after (Oct '66) with the beige interior, no date stamp but still with serials. This mistake seems to resurface repeatedly on this forum and on e-bay descriptions.

Really? I haven't heard of this. I've seen a number of '63 toms and none had badges. Do you have any evidence of a '63 tom with a badge? I don't think anyone's out to "lynch" you, just curious...is it possible you saw a '68 date stamp and confused it with '63?

What is the source of your information ?
There are a lot of expert opinions (not mine... real experts) to the contrary.
None of my pre-66 Slingerland toms have badges, but they are date stamped inside.
I have a complete '63 Modern Jazz Outfit with this scenario as well as my "single" toms from pre-'66.
