Only question I have is... Are the lines actually centered on the shell??

Cheers

I have a `65 Slingerland cob Sound King and it has most of the lugs centered on the 3 lines, that appear to be in the center of the shell, but 2 of the lugs are obviously lower than the others. One lug is not even quite straight vertically.

What was their method of drilling the lug holes? Eyeball engineering?

The drum still sounds great.

Guess I've been fortunate that all the COB Sound King snare drums I've owned, and currently own, had the lugs centered on the shell. As to the tension rods, they were 1.5" in length, measured from below the collar.

I see three lines not centered on the shell indicating a top and bottom purpose like a snare drum will have. It`s well known throughout the drum world that some companies had low to no tolerances with the drilling stations. Close enough will do. I see it a lot with snaregate alignment to the strainers, little to the left, little to the right, very few on center. Of course that`s a maybe so because I don`t have it in my hands. You could have a close enough drum.

You assume that the three lines are not centered...jeez...I have owned this drum for the better part of 3 decades, I think I know my equipment better than you. It's the lugs that are mounted off-center.

At any rate, as it pertains to drums and particularly American drum manufacturers from the 60s-70s, you are correct; things happened. I was just pointing out a particular anomaly I have seen in Slingerland. As I said before; it doesn't affect the tuning or sound of the drum in the slightest. It's one of the best snares I've ever owned and in fact I will be gigging with it this weekend.

Rob

That's what seems to be happening with the drum in this photo, Matt. If you look close, the lug in the middle seems to centered, but the two on either side are a tad lower. Methinks the hole-driller was having a bad day. Fortunately, on my drum all of the lugs seem to be at the same height. As I said, you couldn't get away with this on a Supra!

Best,

Rob

Well all I had was pics. In my last sentence I mentioned I don`t have it and before that It`s better to see with the hoops off.

Should you ask the question and show the pic. with the hoops off....pretty easy stuff. The vent is with the lugs and the screw in it is for ? .....I`ve seen that before.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. I wasn't asking a question; I was pointing out what I had observed and apparently, I'm not alone, others have seen this phenomenon as well.

But no worries...I enjoy this site and everyone who loves reading about (and playing) vintage drums as much as I do.
