I took a look at your black chrome set, very very nice. I had that Copper Buddy Rich set No.80N when I was a kid. Trying to track another one down, haven't seen anything in years! Any idea what I might have to pay for that set today if I find one or what a fair price to pay would be?

Thanks

The Slingerland copper-over-wood finish is very rare and extremely hard to find. To make matters worse, it was a finish that pitted badly over time. I had a pristine original 13/16/22 that I had bought brand new in 73. That color was only in the line for a very short time. Anyhow, like a dummy I sold them a few years later and always regretted it. Any copper Slingerland drums that I have seen in the recent past have all had bad pitting. The only decent set I saw was one owned by a friend of mine Robert Bowler, out at A Drummer's Tradition in San Rafael, CA. This goes back about 5-6 years, and the kit was really rare: 12/14/20 with 6" and 8" matching bongos and a matching SD, and, there was very little pitting. The kit was $2500 and I balked. I called him back a week later and it was gone. Should have grabbed it. That kit would cost a lot more today. My advice, if you find a clean copper over wood kit from the 70s grab it!

If you could find a copper over wood kit in excellent condition it will be VERY expensive. My sense is that a 13/16/22 would cost you $2000 easy, maybe more, and add another $750 if there is a matching SD. If you want a kit with two floor toms chances are slim that this will ever hapen. If for some reason a 13/16/16/22 with a matching SD came along in excellent shape I can see the price tag being $4000. And, if it had a 24 instead of a 22, and it was set up with two cymbal L arms and two sets of spurs ala Buddy, then you're looking at $5000. (I'm talking about a fully original, unpitted kit that came together as a set, not assembled from individual drums found at different times). These are ULTRA hard to find. Very rare.

I know this is an older post but the copper Sligerlands are out there. Your right they're hard to find and no they're not in pristine condition. There are 3 toms on ebay right now. Unfortunately they are sizes I already have. There was a 10 piece set out of a studio that went for $5000.00 in super good condition. 4 of my drums I bought used when I was 14, 35 years ago. They were a little abused when I got them and they're OK. I found a set 2 years ago that were different sizes than mine and I married the 2 sets. I bought another set of shells to get a 20" floor tom. Some one tried to get the wrap off and buggered up the corner. I fixed it as best I could and reglued the wrap. I also picked up a pair of 8"s with the cut away shells. The were from a set of marching drums. Virgin shells no holes for mounts. I cruise ebay all the time keeping an eye out for them. I still need a 6,8,10 or a 14 floor tom. maybe a 20" kick drum.
