Slingerland Drums 1970's-9 piece set Last viewed: 6 hours ago

I got this set back in 1977. They are in very good/excellent condition with original lugs, tension rods, hoops and bottom heads-everything is original except the heads. The bottom heads even have the Slingerland stamp on them. The cymbals are not the original ones in the picture, however, I still have the 14 inch hi-hats, 15 inch crash and 18 inch ride that I got when I was 5 yrs old back in 1965. The bass pedal is a Yellow Jacket since the original pretty much bit the dust. I had to always keep extra leather straps with the original pedal. They have the black and silver badge on all drums. The 8 and 10 inch toms I got several years later in 1979.

The drums are: 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 inch floor tom and a 20 inch bass drum. The snare is 14x5. I'll have to get better close up pictures as these were just taken at the last minute after I put new heads on them. The 14 and 15 inch toms are not shown-I just didn't have them up at the time. I still use these today-nothing like the sound of Slingerland drums to me. They have always sounded great in the studio and out live. Love the deep rich tone these drums have. Wouldn't trade them for anything. I know others would disagree-but that's cool. Thought I'd share them with everyone. Please post comments on them. I'd like to hear from you.

I love it actually. It has a very smooth motion and I have a piece of felt on the wooden ball so the sound is not too harsh. It doesn't take a lot of effort to move the beater which I really like. I've had a couple of DW's but prefer the Yellow Jacket. Thanks for the comment.

You will really enjoy the Yellow Jacket. You can never have enough Slingerland drums, in my opinion. Let me know how you like the Yellow Jacket.

Nice kit (and welcome). I'm a big Slingerland fan as well (see below). I'm not losing any sleep over it, but I'm waiting for the right 12-13-16-22 chrome kit to pull the string on.

Minor quibble that you can take with a grain of salt: Numerous members here will be able to help you acquire the front bass drum hoop and its associated hardware. Sorry if this opens a can of worms, but I think it's better for your bass drum since you're mounting toms (although if you haven't had a problem after 37 years, you're probably safe). That doesn't mean you have to have a full head: If you like the one-headed sound, find an old 20" head and cut an 18" hole. It also looks nicer IMHO.

I had a Yellow Jacket back in the day but donated it to a cousin when he took up drumming. I should reacquire one, but I'll admit that I'm quite fond of my DW chain drive.

I don't think you'll get too much opposition on here about how good they sound..

Did you buy them new in '77 ? .. I have had my kit from '77 also and they still perform very well.. I also have the same 8 & 10 chrome concert toms, but mine are a little later 81 or so..

Cheers

Nice kit Garyk. Ok, so looking at the pics it looks almost like mahogany inside the bass. The reason I ask is last year I posted some pics of my '79 blackrome kit (that I purchased new) and it has a mahogany inner ply which they quit doing in '63. The discussion was whether they used old shells once in a while or if I had a rarity.
