Slingerland for jazz Last viewed: 3 hours ago

About the Slingy 20 bass pedal rock ...

The build has the spurs dead center on the side of the bass and quite a bit up on the shell. I've used just under ten different pedals on them. All of them worked loose as I played. It's all due to the placement of the spurs and my right foot. They just don't work for me. I've used bass stops and even used a level to ensure the bass was right on. Some don't have issues with pedal rock. I did.

RogerSling. That is a very interesting observation. I have not had that issue but I think I follow what you are saying though.

I think the spurs are the only issue with Slingys! I should post pics of my almost complete Slingerland orphan project, 22, 13 and 14x16 in piano black lacquer! I would use them on a jazz gig any day!

Here are some pictures of my prized 1967 Slingerland 4pc jazz kit...

8x12, 16x16, 14x20 and a matching 5.5x14 Artist snare drum (3-ply). Would love to have a 14x14 floor tom, but that would cost $$$!!

I've never had the issue with the bass drum rocking. What I do is put a piece of rubber under the front hoop to raise it the same distance as the back hoop when the pedal is attached. The bass drum is nice and steady!

Since we are comparing lots of brands, what about Premier as jazz drums?

You don't see too many 20,12,14 floating around...

I am a big fan of Premier drums. Their build quality was excellent. My only experience owning them are the two early 70's Olympic kits, but the 20-12-16 I have would be right at home in a smoky jazz club. To be fair, the 16" doesn't like to be tuned particularly high however. It works better if I raise the pitch of the reso head and leave the batter in its lower register. It gets harsh pretty quickly which is not uncommon with many 16x16. The 12" pretty much equals the Slingy 12" I have with the exception of the fact that it is more difficult to tune as it only has 5 lugs.
