Slingerland Help Needed (Please!) Last viewed: 6 hours ago

I've always loved the looks of the vintage duco kits and have an opportunity to purchase one in really nice condition at what I consider to be a reasonable price. However, I noticed a few things on the kit that I'm hoping to get some clarification on from you Slingerland experts out there. Any and all "words of wisdom" would be GREATLY appreciated. Here's what's being offered:

The kit's in a 22/12/16 configuration with a matching 14 snare. All drums have the centered (Stage Band) lugs, other than the floor tom. Included with the drums is an original Slingerland cymbal L-arm and one original Slingerland flat-base cymbal stand. The bass drum is date stamped JUL 64 and the snare is date stamped JUN 64. Both the bass drum and the snare have the black and brass Niles badges w/serial numbers (5-digits?). The rack tom doesn't have a badge or air vent hole (which I believe would be period correct), while the floor tom has a black and brass Niles badge with a serial number (6-digit?).

Now, here are the questions I've got:

1. My initial thought was that it's a Stage Band kit that was purchased without a floor tom and that the 16x16 floor tom was purchased at a later date. However, the matching snare is a 6-lug in lieu of 8-lug model. Did the Stage Band kits come with 6-lug snares in 1964?

2. The rack tom (12") is attached to the bass drum with a clip-on mount and the plate on the rack tom is similar to what's seen on vintage Radio King kits. Would this be era-correct? I was under the impression that these clip-on mounts were used in the '50s but not the '60s. The bass drum (22") is a virgin other than the mount for the cymbal L-arm.

3. The floor tom legs have the closed bracket with the wing nut, despite the fact that the legs themselves are straight. It was my understanding that the straight legs were used between 1958-1964 with the push-button adjustment. I'm convinced, based on the fact that the floor tom has a Niles badge with a serial number that the floor tom is NOT a '64 model and was added to the kit sometime after the original purchase. Would later models also come from the factory with the straight legs?

THANKS in advance for your time and your help.

Gary, the stage band doesn't have a 16x16" size. 14x14" and 12x15" are the floor tom sizes, The snare drum could be either a 6 or 8 lug. It sonds like this wa a jam session kit then someone added a floor tom to it.

Not to my knowledge?

This was really bugging me! Got out my 1971 catalog (the earliest I have) and there is a 14x16. It was No. 1424 in lacquer finishes and No. 1425 in pearl finishes.

Still, I believe we're referring to mid-60's floor toms? If so, there may not have been a 14x16 during that period, but only 12x15 and 14x14 like you previously mentioned. Anyone have some mid-60's catalogs to confirm?

Thanks, Mark. I was aware of the 12x15 FT on the Stage Band kits. What I should have stated is that my initial thoughts were that this kit was purchased as a Stage Band w/o the FT or a Jam Session with a floor tom added to it.

I appreciate your input, as usual.

1. Slingerland made a 14 x 16 (diameter) center lug floor tom in the early '70s. It's in the catalog, and I've had one. Not sure about the '60s.

The stage band sets came with a 6 lug snare drum. Clip on mounts were used in the '60s.

The original poster's set was likely a 3 pc. with the floor tom added later. This was a very common occurrence in the '60s.
