Hey all-
I came across a mystery drum today... a 5.5 x 14" COB Krupa Model with a black/silver badge. Pretty standard. Here is the mystery part. Instead of the Zoomatic throw with the extended butt side, it has a factory Rapid strainer with a standard 2-pt butt side installed. I could have swore that on the COB Krupa shells Slingerland went from the Zoomatic right to the TDR.... has anyone ever seen another like this?

I'm attaching a picture of a 60's 10-lug COB Krupa Sound King that came from the factory with a Rapid strainer and standard butt. I've only seen a handful of these drums and not sure if they were ordered this way or were factory mistakes. My drum sounded great and the Rapid strainer really made sense! Also, and just for correctness, the shell depth is 5" and not 5.5"

Great drums. I've seen a few as well. I'd prefer that to the Krupa with the Zoomatic. I've always guessed that Slingerland sent them out as Festivals. I'm skeptical that the shell is 5.5". Post a pic with a ruler if possible.

TDR stands for Total Dynamic Response. The TDR strainer was basically a beefed-up Rapid strainer set into a frame that allowed the use of extended wires. Think of it as a more modern version of the Radio King 3-pt strainer with bridges. It worked quite well. I had the COB Spitfire version with 12 lugs. I'm attaching some pictures of a Buddy Rich TDR that sold on eBay many years ago. Hope this answers your question!
