Slingerland Radio King Help Last viewed: 5 hours ago

Loading...

I bought this today and was pretty convinced its a Radio King but the more I look at it the more I wonder. The main thing concerning me are 6 extra holes around the throw-off. I'm not sure what they would be from. All the other Radio Kings I've seen don't have these holes. 5 of the holes have phillips head screws in them that are clearly different and newer than the other screws and one of them is just a small hole but looks clean, even factory looking. There looks like there may be a filled split on the inside of the shell, but I haven't opened it up to check for sure. To me everything about the drum looks legit but I'm not super schooled on them. I also couldn't find a serial or model number on it. Please let me know what I have and a round about worth on it. Thanks.

That's the snare that was on ebay right? If i recall right the listing did not say that the drum strainer and butt have been re-worked.Now onto the drum the right strainer that should be on the drum was the Rapid strainer see photo #3 you posted the hole with out te screw in it was for the Rapid strainer and the one that is were the 3 point strainer is would be the top hole for the Rapid. The 4 holes that have the screws ete in them could have been the 4 point S/L strainer or a 60's Gretsch strainer..I would check the butt side of the drum i think that the 6 hole butt was addded to the drum to check this see if the two other holes on each side were added to the drum. Also look under the butt when you remove it and see if you can see the outline of a 2 hole butt on the plastic cover..I would also check the edges of the drum and see if they have been re-cut or you can post some photos i will help you on that. Also look around the grommet on the inside of the drum {or again post photos] the grommet does not look right be me..If the drum is a rewrappped drum you will be able to tell by looking at the grommet....Some sellers on Ebay pull alot of S*** on their listings just to sell a drum ....Mikey

Oh i forgot to say.On the drum would not have the 6 hole snare butt piece on the strainer side with the right Rapid strainer on the drum..Looks like that was added to the drum also...Mikey

Cool I'll try some of that. I didn't get this on eBay though. I bought it from a local music shop that had it on consignment. I guess I could try and find out who the last owner was and see if he has some answers. Your guess would be that its not a Slingerland at all?

No,Yes your drum is a S/L radio king but its from the about 1958-60 or so.It could be a one ply maple shell...Or it could be a 3 ply shell i can't tell by the photos. If you can post a close-up of the edge of the shell....Mikey

Here are some shots of the edges. Not sure if you can tell much from them. It has a few nicks and looks like the re-ring is splitting from the shell a little in a couple places. Not sure if the split on the shell is a split, a weird grain, or a crack. Let me know what you think....Not Mikey.

it is a solid shell not a 3 ply model, the split is very common and an easy fix.

Thanks. Are these rarer with a solid shell? And what would you guess it's worth? I have no intention on selling it I'm just curious as to how I did on my buy.
