Looking for some help with this one...
Grabbed a 40s-50s cloud badge Slingy RK snare. Needs to be sanded down and refinished but for the most part all of the hardware is in good shape. The one thing I'm having an issue with is the clamshell throw. The bolt seized so I can't get it off (grrrr) and I'm debating whether to cut it and either try and find a replacement/repro, or a totally different throw. Any suggestions? I've heard the clamshell throws are pretty bad even when in good shape.
Well, replacing any original part will hurt the drums value. I would try some WD40 or other penetrant to work the loose. Clam Shell strainer get a bad wrap if you ask me, sure they are a bit flimsy, but they are a part of Slingy history, and quite expensive if you can find one btw.
Also, don't sand anything! Strip it, go over the shell with steel wool, but for God's sake don't sand it! That takes away wood and can do lots of harm.
Really? I was going to hand sand with 220 grit and hen go finer and finer. Do you think it would take that much wood off?
Can you post pics of the shell? flaking paint has better resale than a refin. the clam shell hole pattern will only allow another clamshell without extra holes or you can use an adapter plate to not drill extra holes. soak the rusted part in dawn hot water for a good while see how that goes. you'll have to of course remove the clamshell and soak it to clean the rusted part.
Is the bolt reverse threaded?
The absolute best rust/corrosion penetrant is CROIL. Better than anything else, and I've tried them ALL. I soak 100 yr old cornets in them and it works magic. Sanding with 220 or finer will not hurt anything unless you sand it days on end (continuously!).
