Slingerland Radio King Snare Last viewed: 3 hours ago

I bought this snare from a forum member and spent the last couple of days cleaning it up. It's a cool drum and the price was very fair. What I'd like to know is the specific model (Hollywood Ace or Radio King?). The badge suggests late 50s and it has nickel plated lugs and bottom hoop. The top hoop was replaced and the strainer was too (one very small extra hole). The wrap is remarkable for its age with only slight fading under the lugs. Or could it be a rewrap and how can you tell? It's a 14x7 BTW.

Also the snare wires are old and missing a couple of strands and I understand Puresound did replacement ones but not anymore? Do any of you use standard wires with cord with this strainer set-up or is that not going to work.

The badge is pretty bent up and I guess it may have been removed at some point. Is there a recommended way to straighten it so it sits flat without removing it?

Again, I'm totally happy with the purchase and it's going to get some action.

Looks like a Holywood ace to me, you can use cord and regular snares and many people prefer them, I would always get the longer snares though personally, I think they are about 16" puresound make them. Lovely looking drum you have there.

Is the shell a one-ply solid maple drum?

In the late 50's, they were still using the old "glass glitter" type of wrap. This drum has the newer 60's sparkle.

The grommet looks authentic and un-touched. But it may be a re-wrap. Usually, three ply drums have the wrap applied inside the plys. A solid maple shell drum does not. Head removal will tell you the whole story by looking at the bearing edge.

It's interesting that the Radio King parts (strainer, extension brackets) were put on after the non-original strainer was removed. If the drum was re-wrapped, you'd think that extra hole would be covered.

A mystery!

Thanks for the input. It's a single ply drum (see pix). I may try some different wires as the ones on it are pretty old and the adjustabilty with the metal tabs is limited I've found. That said, I've tuned it up and was having a play on it last night and it sounds great.

Awesome drum, very pleasedCool Dude

Great looking drum. I have an early '50s RK (and a Cloud Badge as well), and they both sound great. Shame about the extra hole. I've got a Hayman alloy drum that has a mystery hole. All the hardware is correct, it's as if someone just took a drill to it.

Enjoy the drum.

That looks great!!

As far as I know, the drum was not rewrapped. It was given to me by a middle school band program director. The badge hasn't been removed, it just spent most of its life being messed with by 13 year old drummers :) At least thats what I was told.

Great job!! it really looks nice.

Hey Dave, the fact that the drum has a tone control (should have the smaller knob btw) suggests the drum is a Gene Krupa radio king. I recently purchased a 5.5"x14" late 50's super Gene Krupa that had a zoomatic on it, so ID'ing the drum took a bit of research. The only 7"x14" with an RK strainer and muffler from that badge period is the Krupa radio king. Congrats,it's a beautiful drum !
