I have a vintage Slingerland snare drum that I need help identifying.

I think it's a student snare. It could be a Radio King or Black Diamond. I don't know, that's why I'm seeking guidance from my fellow drummers.

Wood. 5.5/14

Pearl

Chrome Hoops

8 lugs

Oval badge: Niles, Illinois u.s.a

Date July 1961

Everything Original

Hi Giraffe, my thoughts are that it is a student model radio king,

which originally came with a 3 point strainer but changed to rapid

in the late 50's as your drum has.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Stevo.

Your drum is a Hollywood Ace model. not an Rk. They are killer little drums. your is Black Diamond pearl. here is a link to them.

Thanks for your help! It's in pretty good condition. Some of the tension rods have rust. There's some scratches on chrome. What do you imagine it's worth? Should I touch it? Clean it? Sell it? Keep it and play it?

It's not a highly collectabe drum,so it's not worth a lot, maybe 175-200 tops.It looks to be in good shape, and with good heads and tuning, they sound great.Clean the rusted parts with vinegar or coke(no I'm not kidding) and aluminum foil....NO steel Wool.Keep and play it.

Thanks for your help everyone! You're right, as a drummer, it's worth keeping. Thanks for the advice. Never heard about using Coke, but, I'll take your word for it!

I do have a stupid question to ask: What's the difference with a 3-ply laminated shell when compared with maple or birch? Thanks What kind of wood is being used?
