Slingerland Snare - need ID Help and Advice Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Hi,

So I've had this 1965 Slingerland snare for about 10 years now just sitting around. I know it's a 1965 from the date stamp, and I think it's some sort of deluxe student model as it has 6 lugs, and a dampner but I'm not exactly sure what it is. It also has a mysterious handwritten "HLS" inside the shell.

And here's where I need advice... I was going to change the heads since they weren't the originals and I wanted to play the thing, and after I got the hoops and old heads off, I noticed one of the lugs was very loose. I got a small screwedriver and when to tighten the lug screw and when I did, it snapped off inside of the lug. When I decided to loosen the other screw to take the lug off, it did the same thing. So now I have an un-usable lug.

My question is, is it worth tracking down an original 1965 lug for this thing? If so, where do I find one? I found this link on ebay: [ame]http://www.ebay.com/itm/Slingerland-Snare-Drum-Lugs-Chrome-Qty-8-with-Screws-/301281595061?_trksid=p2054897.l4275[/ame] They look very close to what I need, but the part that holds the tension rod is longer than the ones on my lugs, and the screws are hex-only where the ones I have are hex with a split for a flathead.

So again, should I buy those and slap one on, or is my drum worth enough to try and hunt down an exact 1965 lug?

That's a deluxe student model,in sky blue pearl wrap.Same shell as the Hollywood Ace model. It's definately worth replacing the broken lug with an original Slingerland sound king lug. There's also plenty of used parts in the for sale section as well.

I've got the exact very same drum serial # is 83793. Beautiful drum. They sound awesome. Keep it and find a lug. My mounting screws are also slotted hex screws.

the lugs and screws you've shown on the ebay auction are 70's models that is the only difference in the screws from your 60's model.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

I have a few '55-'59 Student nickel over cast if you'd be interested. No tension rods, but the lugs are nicely aged without pitting. Polished one up fantastic to replace a roached lug on a friend's '55 Student. PM me and I can get one to you no problem.

So are you saying I should get the lugs on ebay then?

The 60's lugs do show up as singles on occasion.. I'd wait if possible..

If not, buy a 70's one, the hex screws are also on ebay and it's the same thread..

Those old screws often oxidize and lock up .. best to use a drop of WD40 before attempting to remove them...

Cheers
