Slingerland snare wires with clamshell strainer Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hey beaters,

I thought I'd post a cool discovery I made this week.

My son just got a new (old) Slingy Krupa snare, probably a '61, that has a clamshell strainer. It had new Puresound wires on it but he just couldn't get the sound he wanted out of it. He is a fan of more wires to give it a beefer sound. Hunting around the web, he finds that you can only get 16 wires for these old Krupa's. Looking at the space in the rim for the wires, that makes sense since the wires have to extend beyond the rim to connect to the strainer. Bummer! Other people on the web are having the same issue.

But, I got to thinking about it and thought up a metal extender strip that would have a mounting hole on one end and a hook on the other to connect to a regular set of 14" wires. I dug up some 1/2' metal strips in the garage last night, took a 42 strand off of another drum, and fashioned some crude extenders just to do a "proof of concept". They ended up being about 1.25-1.5" each. Wow, they worked perfectly! The snare is exactly what my son wants now and he can install any wires he wants. Score!!!

The other possible advantage that these clips have is that there is now some vertical relief for the snare wires when the strainer is in the off position which may solve some of the inherent design issues with this strainer.

I plan on getting some thin stainless steel and doing a better, more permanent, job more in line with the quality of this fantastic drum. I'll post some pix of the current setup and my more permanent solution as soon as I can. In the mean time, give it a go if this has been a frustration for you in the past.

Someone should make these little clips available so the community can better customize their beauties!

Let me know what you think.

Happy drumming

Kelly

Hi Kelly!

I think you did an excellent job on coming up with a way to attach "power" snare wires to your son's vintage Slingerland! If it sounds great to your son, good for you! As to myself, I'm a purist and would certainly be seeking out the proper wires for the drum. One aspect of drum design that many people fail to consider, is how wide the snare bed is. That in itself will determine how wide a set of wires you can use. The snare wires need to fit well within the width of the snare bed. I'm pretty sure these wide-strand wires are well outside of the beds. What basically happens is that the wires can't properly contact the section of the head formed by the bed. HOWEVER... I will still say that if your drum sounds great, then go for it! I just wanted to impart a little "snare bed" knowledge to you!
