Slingerland Super Gene Krupa Snare? Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Loading...

Can one of you Slingerland experts please let me know if this snare is a Slingerland Super Gene Krupa?

It's a 5 1/2 x14 and is date-stamped OCT 31, 1960. It's got COB rims and the company's Super (clamshell) strainer. However, based on the research I've done, the Super Gene Krupa snares came with a solid maple shell. Isn't the shell on this particular drum a 3-ply? Any and all "words of wisdom" would be greatly appreciated. THANKS in advance for your time and your help.

I have heard/read there were some 3 ply drums. Seems to fit the timeline but hopefully the experts will say for sure. Really nice drum!

Yes, it is a Super Gene Krupa...and a beauty, too! Also correct in that there were also 3-ply shells.

Beautiful drum...I must say that the "clamshell" strainer, which I've never seen up close and personal, looks more robust than what I would have expected from what I've read about it. What's your opinion on it?

The clamshell body is stamped brass and they were chrome or nickel plated. The attachment bracket is steel. IMO the body could be a little more heavy duty. Most that are abused and over tensioned get bent, tweaked etc.... it can be ugly. If Slingerland made them in cast pot metal like the Ludwig Classic strainers it would be far more durable. The throw itself can be a bit wonky to understand. Seems to be a few points of view to it's proper position. Once you see and understand how the whole thing works it's a very nice unit. Art Deco at it's best. :)

Old School, glad to help. Beautiful drum enjoy it!!
