Slingerland Tilter? Last viewed: 5 hours ago

Loading...

I recently purchased a flat base Ludwig 1400 stand with what I believe is a Slingerland upper rod and tilter. The tilter screws into the threaded top part of the upper rod. A wing nut allows the tilter to tilt and an identical wing nut holds the cymbal in place. I've tried to research this but many images of the tilter are blurred in the old catalog pages. Google hasn't helped me much either. I can't take pictures so I can't post an image. If anyone could post a picture of a vintage Slingerland tilter, I would be VERY grateful. Thank you!!!

Hi Brian!

Slingerland has used the 1666 Cymbal Tilter since 1960, with the only differences being the style of screws and going from aluminum to chrome plating. Picture attached of a newer tilter. These tilters used a thumbscrew to attach it to the upper rod and never, at least to my knowledge, screwed on. Sounds like yours may not be a Slingerland tilter.

Hi, Mark!

Thanks for the information! I'm sure you're right. I may have a Japanese copy. What is throwing me off though is there is an almost identical tilter on ebay, "Slingerland L-Arm Cymbal Stand Adjustable Tilter Mount 3/8 Inch Chrome Vintage 60's". It is being sold by counterhoop. Only the lower wing nut and screw are very slightly different. The seller claims "All Original." What are your thoughts, Mark? Thanks again.

Hi again, Mark,

The seller of the tilter just wrote back. He told me that the tilter was held on with a set screw (not visible in picture two), not by screwing it into a threaded upper section. Japanese? Thanks again for your patience and expertise, Mark!

Hi Brian,

Yes, it is an early Slingerland model 1666 tilter. Both wing screws look correct. I would say that the felt and nylon sleeve are aftermarket, but no big deal. Slingerland normally used black rubber sleeves. As to having a set screw, that is also probably aftermarket, as Slingerland used a thumb screw on the early tilters. For the most part, the tilter is original Slingerland.

Thanks again, Mark! I'm learning more every day! A lot of it from you, sir. I suppose that leaves me with a Japanese copy? That's okay. It works and I have several Ludwig originals!! Hey! that's primarily because of you as well! Thanks again, my friend.

This is weird, Mark. The seller wrote again and told me that he always thought it was a Slingerland tilter but, in retrospect, It might be Walberg and Auge! I am really curious now as to what mine might be. As a collector of Stars, it really wouldn't surprise me if mine were Japanese. Star copied Slingerland to the point of near mirror images!

The seller seems like a good guy. I'll pass on anything I learn to him!

Bingo! I think I've found the tilter. I just checked out the old Tama catalogs and it appears to be a 1966 ,No, 715 "shell mount cymbal holder". I collect Stars! My kit and hardware are from 1971. By then, the tilters had changed! I researched everything BUT Star! Duh!!!

Brian!

Glad to know your research as paid off! I'm posting a picture of the cymbal holder from the 1966 catalog. And, yes, the tilter does resemble a Slingerland!
