I did the strike the drum while holding it by the rim (off the stand) and the positive difference in tone, resonance and sustain was remarkable.
I emailed Gauger percussion about RIMS for my 1965 Slingerland set. Mr. Gauger promptly responded with the idea of just attaching the riveted pieces which form the receiver slot to their Universal Plate and away I go. I don't want to disassemble my original plates and thus my inquiry here.
They are for these 1965 Gene Krupa Deluxe 1N with extra tom and kick
