I’ve had this drum about 3 years. I’ve done nothing to it since I got it other than replace a snare-side head and add new wires. It sounds fantastic. I figured don’t mess with the mojo.
6.5 x 14 Slingerland Universal Snare from sometime in the late 30’s or early 40’s. It has the 1928 - 1941 cloud badge, and this depth appears in the 1940 catalog.
I believe its 3 ply mahogany-poplar-mahogany with the interior and exterior plys being very thin. The exterior ply is really beautiful. Nice grain and stain in really good shape. It may have been restored before it came to me, but not sure. If so, it’s extremely well done.
The interior ply has some issues. The thin mahogany has delaminated some from the poplar, splitting away from the screws and re-rings. I considered getting this repaired and had it looked at by John Fell at Main Drag Music in 2013. Because the drum sounded so good as-is, he recommended to do nothing, play it, and check on the interior occasionally. In three years, nothing has changed. You could restore it. I decided not to.
It has 6 original nickel over brass tube lugs. The nickel over steel straight hoops are Leedy. There is some plating flaking off on the snare side hoop.
9 of the nickel hoop clips are one type, 3 on bottom are slightly different type - all same vintage, not sure what make.
Strainer and butt are original. The strainer throw lever is broken off. Can’t be thrown on and off but otherwise functions fine.
New 12-Strand Puresound Concert Series wires

New Remo Diplomat Snare on bottom.
