Snapped my Speed King Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hey all! Has anyone else ever encountered something like this?

I was in the middle of a song when my pedal suddenly stopped working, and looked down to find this disaster...

Wow! Pedal go BOOM!

I've been playing Speed Kings for nigh on 50 years and I have never seen a crossbar snap like that. The bearings must have locked up completely on the right side and there must have been some serious force/torque applied in order to snap the cross-bar the way it is. Maybe the bar was already cracked/compromised and you just hadn't noticed it. Add the bearings locking up and you stomping down on the pedal in the middle of a number and, viola! Busted cross-bar.

Weird... that's a first on me.

Hope you didn't stop playing. I had pedals fail on me twice over the years. The first time, I used my right stick to keep the bass drum rhythm going and the second time I used the floor tom to keep the groove going until the end. Neither time did I have a spare pedal with me. After the second event, I started taking a spare snare and a spare pedal. I never worried about busting heads because you can always turn a drum around and use the reso. Lessons learned.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

It's usually the metal strap hold that gives but even that is rare. You don't see broken SK pedals often. Hurting

John hit the nail on the head.

I have two SK's in the shop that have the same broken cross bar.

The bearing on the goal post was frozen on the side where cross bar snapped.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I think it must have had a casting flaw from the very beginning? maybe?

That definitely seems like the only likely conclusion. I'm going to take it apart (possibly this weekend) and see what happened.

Is that a part that can be swapped out? Or is this thing pretty much toast?
