snare stand Limbo........ how low can you go? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

It was mentioned a few days ago around here about tweaking your snare drum stand to allow for a very low adjustment. It rang a bell with me so I went for it and was able to get it much lower so I don't have to worry about unplanned rim shots because my customized 8 X 14 Ludwig snare is sitting too high in the snare basket. Here's photos of the tools I used and a few how to's. Should be self explanatory beyond saying that basically you need an Allen key to remove the set screw at the adjustment knob on the lower stand section, and shorten the down tube of the snare basket by the same amount. Use a little block of wood to knock the fitting off after the set screw is taken out, and cut with a pipe cutter. Be sure to file the inside edge of the bottom section tube before you put the fitting back on, because the cutter compresses the pipe as it cuts, preventing the down tube from fitting back inside the lower section. Works like a charm. Go for it.

Tell ya what I'd LOVE to have back: Back in the day, I went through a period where all I'd use were 8" snares. (My fave was a Radio King with 8 single lugs.) Anyway, it was the time of the 9-foot-deep "Snare O' Death" sound and rimshots were generally accidental. I HATED tilting my snare toward me so I went through my boneyard.

I scared up a Ludwig Atlas snare stand base and a Rogers Supreme basket. All 1" tube so I was "in there like a hair in a grilled cheese sandwich". Went LOWER than I needed, lightwight but STABLE.

Yet another piece of gear that went away during my horse-tradin' days. If you can ever find a rig like that, you'll never think about it again if you like 8" or deeper snares (especially if you sit low) and don't want them practically vertical in front of you.

Good luck.

Nice one glen. I'm cobbling together a little kit for my son zakk. A converted 16" floor tom as a bass drum, a 10" & 13" hanging toms, and a 12"x4" snare that I made from a spare tom shell that I had knocking about. But the snare was too high for him. Hopefully I can sort that for him now. I'll sort pics when i'm done.

Drums are loud....So play them LOUD!!!

Not really vintage, but if you are using a super-deep snare drum, or a marching one for that matter, the new Ludwig Modular series (both single and double braced) snare stands come with a super low stand option. It has an "omni-ball" adjustment for the basket, can accomodate 15" diameter snares, and goes low enough for an 8, 10, or even 12" deep snare.
