I recently acquired a 14x6.5 Slingerland Sound King snare in beautiful condition. I replaced the 20 strand snares that came with it with a set of 30 strand Pure Sounds (I like a lot of snare) and spent a good hour tuning it up and getting the right snare tension. I got it sounding great. I mean really, really nice. But then I threw off the snares and noticed they were still buzzing loosely against the reso instead of being fully off. I feel like the Zoomatic throw off isn't 'throwing off' enough. I have to really loosen the snares to lose the snare sound, to the point that I get an unreasonable amount of buzz when the snares are in the on position.
Anyway, could this be a problem with the design of the Zoomatic strainer itself? Or maybe 30 strand wires are a bit much for this particular drum (though the snare beds appear perfectly wide enough to support them)? Or could it even be a tuning problem? I really hope you guys can help me figure this one out because I am absolutely loving the sound I get from this drum.. Until I throw off the snares.
