Snare wires for 6.5" Supra? Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Loading...

I'm looking to equip my '66 6.5" Ludalloy Supraphonic with a set of wires that will give me the "classic" Supra sound. I believe at that time Supra's came from the factory with Ludwig 18-strand wires - not sure if they had metal or resin/plastic ends.

Anyway, I'd like some recomendations on what modern wires would come closest to the original Ludwigs sound-wise.

I use Puresound Custom 20 strand on ALL my Supra's. Depending on the genre of music you play the 30 strand on a 6.5 X14 Supra is awesome. IMO if you want vintage type wires Canopus makes some good ones

Thanks, redneck. I'm assuming the Puresound 20-strand (or 16-strand?) would give me a sound closer to the original 18-strand Ludwigs, and the Super 30's would probably be more akin to the Bonzo/42-strand thing.

Which Canopus do you think would be closer to the Ludwigs - the Chrome or the Dry model?

thanks again,

Thanks. I'm looking at the Puresound site and under "Custom" I don't see any reference to steel, brass, etc. I'm assuming that all Custom's use steel wires, and their brass wires are now called "Custom Pro". Is this correct?

Thanks for the clarification. Now I see: under Custom Pro you have to use the little pull-down menu to see the steel models. Bad Web page design.

mfry55: I would be concerned that the Ludwig 12-strand heavy's might give me too much "drum" and not enough "snare". I think the COB Supra's came with 12-strand wires. Is yours a COB or Ludalloy?

thanks,

It's COB. Sounds good, plenty of "snare" You can also get the Ludwig 20 strand on the links.
