Snares snares and MORE snares! (WFL, Ludwig) Last viewed: 5 hours ago

Here they are. The two reds are pre-serial number keystones, the 4 whites are dated at '65, and the faded BDP is the WFL.

I would be a heck of a project to cut down all those shells into standard sizes.

Would you still have some extra or oddly placed mounting holes for strainers, butt ends, and badges?

Gotta get shorter tension rods all around.

Gotta cut bearing edges and new snare beds, of course.

Are the red and white shells painted, or wrapped, I can't tell by the pic?

For me, I'd pick the two I want to keep, and sell the others after a good cleaning to fund the resto or modification, if you must, of the others.

You could even cherry-pick the better looking hardware for the two you keep, and pass on the other shells with correct hardware.

Lots of folks like the old marchers as is, and would welcome the chance of restoring one.

I have a few myself.

If they were all cut down, that possibility is gone.

Just my nickel's worth for a penny.......:)

Nice lot of snares!

Those also make great extra toms in a kit as well as "auxiliary snare" when needed for deep tone snare work, not to mention a heck of a conversation piece with your band mates. Probably just fine as they are and will retain their value better.

A few cut down will make a great project. There is a market out there for people who used to march in the '60's and want their old drums back, me being among them.

I'm keeping the WFL as is. The red ones are originally painted (as far as I can tell). The white ones were painted over the wrap. I'm going to do some e-baying with some pieces. Maybe whole drums, maybe parts. The two reds are nickel so I may end up cutting one or those down.

I haven't done anything with them really because I haven't a clue as to what I want to do yet. Lol. So many choices!

Apparently the two red snares and at least one white are BDP underneath. I used a little lacquer thinner to pull some paint off. Now I need to check some more. The paint preserved the BDP very well over the past 50+ years. I'm going to get some 3M Safest Stripper tomorrow to pull off more red paint!

I plan on eBay-ing some parts. They should be up sometime.

The white ones did not strip with the 3M product. I did two liberal applications to no avail. I found a spot that red paint was showing through, applied some lacquer thinner and they are also BDP. I have one drum that was in rough condition cut down to a 6.5" and I am in the process of reinstalling a rering. Oh the joys!
